2 The growing popularity of the Botanic Gardens Glider Service has prompted an expansion of its weekday service. Following a satisfying year of solid growth for the Glider in 2024, The Friends of the Botanic Gardens have decided to add two extra tours to the weekday schedule from the beginning of March, with the 8-seater electric people mover then operating each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30 and 10:45. The expanded weekday services will replace the previously scheduled Saturday runs, however weekend tours can still be arranged by appointment. Our passenger feedback indicated a definite preference for scheduled tours on weekdays, although the Glider service is available for specially arranged tours any time outside our set timetable. These tours have already proven to be extremely popular with visiting groups from aged care facilities, service and social clubs and retirement villages. We have found that our ability to specially tailor tours to fit in with group numbers and schedules has resulted in multiple repeat bookings which open up the botanic gardens experience to a wider number of their members. The Botanic Gardens Glider Tours all depart from the Sensory Garden Pavilion. The cost is $5.00 per person and bookings are essential through www.trybooking.com/CCSSZ For more information, contact 0400048006 or glider@ friendsgcrbg.org.au Expanded service for Botanic Gardens Glider GC Botanic Gardens 230 Ashmore Rd, Benowa Local family run Espresso bar with great organic coffee, cold drinks, sweet and savoury food available from the display cabinet. PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In the intricate workings of the human body, the eyes are remarkable organs that require a myriad of nutrients to function optimally and stave off diseases. The adage “you are what you eat” holds particularly true when it comes to maintaining eye health. A balanced diet is not just beneficial for your waistline but also for your eyesight. The connection between nutrition and eye health is well-established. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play pivotal roles in maintaining eye health and preventing conditions like cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting the eyes from oxidative stress that can lead to chronic eye diseases. Vitamin C, found abundantly in citrus fruits and vegetables, supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. It’s believed to combat cataract formation and, when combined with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of AMD and visual acuity loss. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, can be sourced from nuts and seeds and contributes to cell protection from free radicals. Zinc, a mineral present in high concentrations in the eyes, plays a crucial role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina, aiding in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Meat, poultry, fish, and legumes are excellent sources of zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. They are natural sunblock for the eyes, filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protecting against oxidative damage. Leafy greens, eggs, and other foods are rich in these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are vital for cell membrane health in the retina and may help prevent AMD. Fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3s. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, exemplifies a dietary pattern that supports eye health. It’s not just about individual nutrients; the synergy of a nutrient-rich diet contributes to overall eye health and function. The significance of nutrition in eye health cannot be overstated. As we age, our eyes are susceptible to various conditions, but a diet rich in specific nutrients can help protect our vision. It’s a simple yet powerful truth: the food we consume can have a profound impact on our eyesight. Schedule Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting potential eye conditions before they manifest symptoms and cause irreversible vision loss or blindness. 8 After a separation it can often be difficult for parents to work together to reach a parenting arrangement that is in the best interests of the children. There are many methods that can be employed to assist parents in reaching an agreement without a need to resort to initiating Court proceedings. One of the best ways that parents can try to reach an agreement is through mediation. In a mediation the parties are assisted by an independent, unbiased third party to try to reach an agreement that works best for the children. Depending on the age of the children it may also be beneficial to participate in a child inclusive mediation. In a child inclusive mediation, the children are included in the decision-making process by meeting with the mediator or suitably qualified consultant to give voice to their thoughts, feelings and wishes. Alternatively, the parties may wish to have a formal Family Report prepared prior to a mediation. A Family Report is prepared by a suitably qualified professional whom is usually a social worker or psychologist. The Report considers both the parents views and wishes and those of the children and then makes recommendations as to what parenting arrangements may be in the best interests of the children. In Court proceedings the Court will usually require the parties to undertake a Family Report prior to making any decisions and that Report is almost always given significant weight by the Judge when making the decision. The benefit of commissioning a Family Report prior to Court is that it could assist the parties in avoiding expensive Court costs and if the matter does resort to Court the Report can then be provided to the Court without the need for a further delay. At Ormeau Legal we can help parties arrange a mediation, whether it is child inclusive or not, and can assist parties in arranging for a Family Report. We can guide parties in reaching a child appropriate agreement that suits each client’s particular needs. If an agreement is reached, we can then assist parties in preparing Consent Orders to formalise the agreement. 9 Free bowel screening now available from age 45 The eligible starting age for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program has recently been lowered to 45, as recommended in the latest national screening guidelines for colorectal cancer. This means that people aged between 45 and 74 can now participate in the national program: • 45-49 year olds can join the program by requesting their first bowel screening test kit. • 50-74 year olds will continue to receive a bowel screening test kit in the mail, when they are due to screen. The free bowel screening test kits are completed at home and can help find early changes in the bowel, sometimes years before cancer develops or symptoms appear. Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when it is found early. To request a free initial or replacement test kit, fill out the webform at ncsr.gov.au/boweltest or phone 1800 627 701. The test kits are sent to the postal address registered with Medicare or DVA, so it is important to keep this address up to date. Grease a 12-hole muffin tray and line with paper cases. Soak dried fruit in just enough boiling water to cover for 10 minutes. Drain well, then pat dry with paper towel. Sift the flour, soda and spices into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugar until combined. Add to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the fruit. Divide the mixture among muffin cases, then bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack. Meanwhile, place the extra 2 tablespoons sugar in a pan with 2 tablespoons water and simmer over low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Brush the glaze over the muffins. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add lemon juice and just enough hot water to make a thick, pipable icing. With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae has to kick off a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers - aka DS Steel’s team - until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions. But, as bad as everything seems, there’s something far more sinister lurking in the heat haze of this sweltering Aberdeen summer: something that’s been building for years.
