2 In our fast-paced lives, filled with digital screens and constant visual stimuli, it’s easy to overlook the significance of maintaining good eye health. However, regular checkups with an optometrist are not just a precautionary measure; they are essential for preserving the precious gift of sight and overall well-being. One of the primary reasons to prioritise optometric check-ups is the early detection of potential issues. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. An optometrist can detect these conditions through comprehensive eye exams, allowing for early intervention and effective management. Timely diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to the eyes and, in some cases, even save one’s vision. Moreover, optometrists are equipped with the expertise to address refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While it might be tempting to rely on over-the-counter reading glasses or online prescriptions, these solutions may not adequately address the unique visual needs of each individual. Optometrists tailor prescriptions based on a thorough understanding of the patient’s eye health, ensuring optimal vision correction. Regular eye check-ups are particularly crucial for children, as undetected vision problems can hinder their learning and development. Children may not always express vision concerns or even recognise them, making routine optometric visits essential for identifying and addressing potential issues early on. Good vision is integral to a child’s academic success and overall well-being. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. Hitler’s forces are wreaking unspeakable damage across Europe. In public, Gregor and Arielle von Auspeck are an aristocratic couple who play an important role in Berlin’s high society. In private, they disagree with everything Hitler stands for. What Arielle doesn’t realise is that life as she knows it is about to change for ever. Midway through a trip to occupied Paris, Arielle is forced to flee to the countryside under a new identity. She escapes to a remote town, masquerading as a Parisian widow. Only her daughter Marianna, stuck in Berlin, knows that her mother is hiding somewhere in France. While Arielle waits to be reunited with her family, her new friend Sebastien introduces her to the Resistance movement, who fight for good over evil. When the war finally ends in 1945, everyone has lost someone, the von Auspecks included. Their possessions have long been seized and Berlin lies in rubble. What happened to Marianna during the bombing? And can mother and daughter finally be reunited? Arielle has lost almost everything she loves, but her will to survive only grows stronger . . . Emergency Alert is the national telephone-based warning system used to send voice messages to landlines and text messages to mobile phones to warn people of emergencies. This includes dangerous weather with potentially severe impacts. An Emergency Alert is just one way for authorities to warn communities of a dangerous situation in the area and only issued when necessary. They are not issued for every circumstance but the message will include important, potentially life-saving directions which require you to take action to stay safe. You do not need to register to receive an Emergency Alert from the system which is sent from caller ID number: +61 444 444 444. Messages from +61 444 444 444 are not a scam, they are official phone warnings as part of a national geo-targeting emergency alert system. Residents are being asked to check the number is not blocked on their device and to add it to their ‘favourites’, so they don’t miss the alerts. If you follow these steps, even if your phone is set to ‘do not disturb’ you will still receive the alert, no matter what time of the day or night it is issued. Visit the Disaster Management website for the latest Emergency Alert details and for local area information on Local Government disaster dashboards. • For assistance with a life-threatening situation phone Triple Zero (000) immediately. • For assistance with non-life-threatening situations — such as help with a damaged roof or storm damage — phone SES on 132 500. • Keep up to date with the latest weather advice at Queensland Warnings Summary (bom.gov.au)

City acquires cleared land to restore to koala habitat A 146-hectare property to be restored for koala habitat and provide for future environmental offsets has been acquired by the City. The land, which links already existing conservation areas, was strategically chosen through the Koala Habitat Acquisition Program. “The Gold Coast has some of the most important koala habitat and populations in South East Queensland and we are committed to protecting and nurturing our koalas,” Mayor Tom Tate said. “City officers will now take steps to begin restoring cleared areas as koala habitat by planting native vegetation and removing any weeds. “Restoring this land is part of our work to support the long-term viability of the east Coomera koala population and secure a Northern Koala Corridor from Coomera and Pimpama through to the hinterland.” The acquired land connects Gainsborough Parklands, Hotham Creek Reserve, Old Wharf Road Parklands and Pimpama Conservation Area allowing for improved management, access, and fauna movement. The property also secures connectivity along 4 km of the Pimpama River and Hotham Creek, allowing the City to restore a buffer to improve regional water quality outcomes. The new parcel of land is another step the City is taking to help protect koalas which includes: • Implementing conservation programs for private landholders • Installing flashing “koala” road signs and fauna fencing Tickets: $40 Standard $30 (Concession, Bond students/staff/alumini) www.eventbrite.com.au Enquiries: Robina Literary Club 5580 9118
