We know what it feels like. We can write it down.’ A beautiful, razor-sharp debut by Sarah Handyside, Instructions for Heartbreak is a life-affirming novel about female friendship, self-love and how to survive a broken heart. What if heartbreak came with a manual? It starts with a late-night knock on the door. Thirtysomething best friends Dee, Liv and Rosa share a flat in south London, while Katie, the fourth member of their friendship group, lives close by with her long-term boyfriend. But, when Katie’s nine-year relationship ends – suddenly and brutally – she turns up on their doorstep with no idea where she’ll live, what to do next or how to do anything after spending so long with her life entwined with someone else’s. Out comes the martini shaker (an old, well-washed gherkin jar) and, with an unused sketchbook, an idea. They’ll make Katie the handbook that she needs to process her heartbreak and start rebuilding her life. There are notes on tears, hangovers and roast chicken, scribblings about music, new bedding and pure, white-hot rage. Everywhere there is permission to feel agony and elation and anger, and everything that is extraordinary and appalling. But Katie is not the only one nursing a broken heart. Rosa is a hopeless romantic, despite still reeling from her ex’s infidelity. Scarred by her ex’s parting words, Dee is committed to being commitmentfree. And while Liv knows that breaking up with her girlfriend was what she wanted, she can’t help but wonder if she did the right thing . . 12 Australia is once again gearing up for the Great Cane Toad Bust, a nation-wide event running from 18th January - 26th January 2025, where communities across the country unite to capture and remove as many cane toads as possible. Hosted annually by Watergum Community as Australia’s only largescale cane toad bust, this year’s event highlights the organisation’s world-first Cane Toad Tadpole Trap and Lures, as featured on Gardening Australia, to break the toad’s breeding cycle. Since their introduction to Australia in 1935 as a humble 102 toads to control cane beetles, cane toads have become one of the country’s most invasive species, now numbering more than 200 million. These destructive cane toads pose a significant threat to our native wildlife, pets and even mining and agricultural industries. Kelsi Taylor, Watergum’s Invasive Species Manager, says community intervention has become crucial in curbing continued prolific growth of these invasive breeders. “Cane toads can produce more than 35 times more eggs than our native green tree frogs, with a single female cane toad producing up to 70,000 eggs per year,” Miss Taylor said. “Consistent toad busting is key to reducing local populations, and by engaging the Australian community, we can expand our reach,” she said. Getting involved in the Great Cane Toad Bust is easy, all you need are rubber gloves, a bucket and a torch to head into your gardens or local areas and start hunting for toads. Watergum also encourages locals to trap tadpoles by day to boost impact and break the cane toad breeding cycle. Past participants have praised the event for transforming their local areas. “I was amazed how quickly cane toad numbers dropped after my local busting event! It felt impactful knowing that my kids and I played a role and gave us a sense of accomplishment,” one participant said. “By removing more than 4,000 toads, I have seen a lot more native frogs in my nursery areas which has been wonderful,” another local buster said. Miss Taylor acknowledged that many people may be hesitant to try toad busting at first but encouraged families to get involved. "It is a fantastic and rewarding activity for the whole family,” she said. “A single toad bust has been shown to remove up to 47% of a local population in one night. “The more people who get involved, the greater our impact will be.” Watergum Community emphasises it is vital to practice humane RSPCA-approved stepped hypothermia to euthanise Cane Toads, remembering their presence in Australia was due to human intervention. How to get involved Join us for the Great Cane Toad Bust! The main event runs from January 18th to 26th 2025, but your impact can begin immediately. With great prizes up for grabs for the biggest catch, best team name and more, now’s the time to register! Access an informative ID guide and humane euthanasia instructions on the Great Cane Toad Bust website. www. watergum.org/greatcanetoadbust A rallying call as Australia’s Greatest Cane Toad Bust returns This will be the first significant change to bin collection schedules in 20 years. 13 MRQ Jacobs Well second marine rescue unit to transition on the Gold Coast Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Jacobs Well is now part of Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ), further enhancing the MRQ presence on the Gold Coast. The 90-strong volunteer unit, which formed more than four decades ago, is the sixth Volunteer Marine Rescue unit in Queensland to transition to MRQ since 1 July 2024. MRQ is Queensland’s first state-wide, State Government-funded volunteer marine rescue service dedicated to saving lives at sea and supporting those on or near the water. MRQ is part of Queensland Police Service, which is responsible for coordinating the state’s disaster and emergency services response – but MRQ is a separate service with its own identity, structure, governance and uniforms. VMR Jacobs Well covers the northern Gold Coast and southern Moreton Bay areas and typically averaged more than 600 activations a year, ranging from breakdowns, drifting vessels, grounding, insufficient fuel to search and sinking/sunk vessels. The unit’s top three longest serving members are: Operations Manager John Jacobsen who joined in 1984, Senior Offshore and Bar Crossing Training Skipper Jeffrey Brayshaw who joined in 1986 and Sam Messina who joined in 1995. MRQ Jacobs Well follows the transition of MRQ Hervey Bay which joined MRQ on 3 December 2024, MRQ Victoria Point on 19 November 2024, MRQ Currumbin on 14 November 2024 and MRQ Gladstone and Mackay units in July 2024. Further marine rescue units from South-East Queensland are expected to follow in 2025. MRQ Chief Officer Tony Wulff said VMR Jacobs Well’s move to MRQ was another exciting step for marine rescue in Queensland. “This is a milestone for MRQ Jacobs Well and the Gold Coast’s onwater community,” he said. “We know the community has relied on the Jacobs Well volunteers for more than four decades and they will continue to do so and the same, friendly faces will still be there.” “The government’s commitment to marine rescue and the on-water community to keep everyone as safe as possible is testament to the thousands of marine rescue volunteers across our great state.” MRQ Jacobs Well Unit Commander Stewart Wall said the volunteers were looking forward to continuing to keep the area’s on-water community safe, this time under the MRQ banner. “We have always had strong ties to our community, starting in 1979 when the unit was known as Beenleigh Air Sea Rescue. Our current base facilities were opened in 1986 and we’ve remained here ever since,” he said. “I am proud to lead our existing members, and welcome new ones to MRQ Jacobs Well.” Further information can be found here: https://www.mrq.qld.gov.au/ safety-information Water safety tips: • Log your journeys from start to finish • Always wear your lifejacket • Remember to pack sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat and water (2 litres per person) • If you need help, radio VHF-16 or call Triple Zero • Check you have extra fuel • Check the weather forecast before you leave • Charge your phone and any other devices • Tell family and friends where you are going • 300g chicken breast fillets, cut into 3 cm pieces • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind, plus lemon wedges to serve • 2 teaspoons dried oregano • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 300g orange sweet potato, unpeeled • 1 large tomato, chopped • 1 Lebanese cucumber, chopped • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced • 1½ tablespoons sliced kalamata olives • 40g reduced fat feta cheese, cut into 1 cm cubes • ½ baby cos lettuce, leaves separated • ¼ cup tzatziki dip Place chicken in a large bowl. 14 Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 – one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history – and the McCarthyism that gripped America in the 1950s. THE CRUCIBLE is a story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice, culminating in a violent climax, is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.
