2 Queensland homeowners and renters now have an unprecedented opportunity to secure their energy future with SunEnergy’s innovative SunZero solar and battery program. Thanks to an $10 million fund, SunEnergy is offering up to 600 households a fully maintained solar and battery systems at no cost, with most participants expected to save between $5,000 and $10,000 over a 10-year period. In some cases, savings could exceed $15,000—all without any upfront costs or financing. Why Queenslanders Should Act Now The SunZero Program, now expanding into Queensland following its successful pilot in South Australia, allows participants to harness the state’s abundant sunshine. With Queensland’s superior solar potential, households can not only reduce their energy bills but also potentially earn higher rebates by selling excess energy back to the grid. As we approach the 2030 Net Zero in Government Operations Strategy, which aims for net-zero government operations by 2030, the demand for energy-efficient solutions is more critical than ever. The growing adoption of electric vehicles is adding strain to the electrical grid, particularly at night when solar power is not available. SunEnergy’s program offers a solution, enabling households to safeguard themselves against rising energy costs and contribute to a more resilient grid. A True WIN-WIN-WIN Situation Ernest Brindley, Queensland’s SunEnergy Agent, expressed his enthusiasm for the program: "This is a true WIN-WIN-WIN situation. The household gets a Solar and Battery system installed for free and enjoys cheaper electricity costs, the retailers can utilise the energy stored in batteries to support the grid during times of high demand, and thirdly, we’re paid to help households reduce some of their cost of living. I'm really excited to be a part of a program that not only helps reduce emissions, but I'm extremely proud to be part of something where we can reduce the cost of living for households that may not have been able to afford a solar and battery solution otherwise." Local Impact and Benefits For Queenslanders, the financial benefits are substantial. The savings for households are significant, allowing families to redirect these funds to other important expenses such as mortgages, car payments, or even just groceries. Additionally, by locking in energy savings for the next 10 years, participants can protect families from the uncertainty of rising energy costs. Another great thing about the SunZero program is that, unlike traditional solar purchases which require a significant upfront investment—a cost that landlords or tenants are typically unwilling to bear—this program costs nothing upfront. As a result, landlords experience an instant increase in the value of their investment, while tenants can enjoy the benefit of reduced electricity costs. Eligibility and Focus Areas The program is open to all Queenslanders, subject to an eligibility assessment based on factors such as energy consumption, available roof space, shading issues, and a suitable location for the battery. While the program is available statewide, the initial focus will be on homes in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas, as we expand our network of installers to other regions. Currently, Diamond Energy is the primary retailer with a choice of new retailers expected to offer plans on the program very soon, providing customers with options to switch to the best energy plan for their needs. Success Stories from South Australia SunEnergy’s initiative has already made a significant impact in South Australia. Customers like J Matt, who shared that SunEnergy was "absolutely AMAZING to deal with," and Michael Xuan, who is "really happy with the new battery setup," highlight the program’s success and the positive experience of participants. Get Involved Queensland residents interested in seeing if their home or rental property qualifies for this program can contact the Queensland office at 07 5600 7560 or visit SunEnergy.com.au to fill out their details and receive a callback. 6 (L) Ryan Gittoes, Knoll Studio & (R) Blaize van Niekerk (GCPHN) Financial assistance from the Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) for residents affected by the destructive summer storms is not only helping to rebuild communities, but also making them stronger. The Reconnection for Resilience Community Grants Program provided 15 community grants of up to $5000 for local not-for-profit organisations, healthcare organisations, sporting clubs and primary care providers in the storm and flood hit areas. “While the property rebuilds continue, so are the psychological health recoveries of those residents directly affected by the storms,” GCPHN CEO Matt Carrodus said. “Through programs that foster ongoing resilience, we are helping to empower people with the resources and support necessary to complete their recovery journeys,” he said. Mr Carrodus said funded activities included programs aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing through support embedded in addressing social isolation, sport and exercise classes, art therapy, skills development initiatives, community BBQs and more. We highlight a couple amazing organisations that are cleverly using their grants funding to build better local communities: Men’s Social – The Knoll Studio, Tamborine Mountain Tamborine Mountain was arguably hardest hit by the Christmas night storm that came out of nowhere. We all saw the confronting images of houses unroofed, powerlines and trees down and of locals toiling alongside emergency services to restore some sort of order to their suddenly shattered lives. It’s a proud mountain community and, as the bricks and mortar rebuild continues, it’s also one still coming to grips with its collective mental health recovery. Cue the Men’s Social at The Knoll of emergency food and water supplies and toiletries and other essentials for people driven from their homes or those staying put to comprehend what had just happened amid prolonged power outages. But Jennifer said next time it will be different. “One of the things we realised is that we were sending people away with their emergency supplies in boxes and we thought that was undignified. So, we created Bags on the Go, with everything packed in a sturdy reusable suitcase that people can wheel out of our centre with pride. The bags are the packed with donated toiletries and essential disaster recovery items like battery powered radios, weatherproof document holders, towels and face washers, washing powder, coins for laundromats, deodorants and other hygiene products,” she said. The Studio Village Community Centre was established 30 years ago by the local community. It’s one of 140 Neighbourhood and Community Centres (NCC's) around Queensland responding to loneliness and social isolation. On a day-to-day basis it provides a community garden, day activities, bowls, craft classes, new parent support and playgroups, and plenty more. “Our clients are diverse and in the aftermath of the disaster we also welcomed everyone to explore our community wellbeing and mental health services,” Jennifer said. “At times of need we’re always there to provide physical and emotional support and Bags on the Go is just another innovative and locally tailored example of how we put grants monies like these to the very best use,” she said. Studio Village Community Centre has a range of activities and programs, with a friendly smile and helping hand. More details are available at https://studiovillage.com.au/ Reconnection for Resilience: Grants Deliver Late Christmas Cheer Studio at North Tamborine which was established with recovery grant funds to bring the men of the mountain together to heal. Founder, local muso Ryan Gittoes, said there was plenty of incentive to make it happen. “After the disaster, the mental health of a lot of local men was affected, which highlighted the undeniable importance of blokes who have shared an experience like this getting together socially,” Ryan said. “I knew of a couple of guys that had sadly ended their own lives and that was the catalyst for me to say: ‘OK we need to do something’. The idea was if we can create connections through social gatherings and support men who might be struggling, there would be immense power in that. And that’s exactly what we found by providing a supportive space for men to openly share their experiences and challenges without judgement,” he said. Ryan said the social nights, held inside a funkily renovated disused electricity substation at North Tamborine, can on any night can be about music, open mic standup comedy, food, ping pong, darts, chess and more. Our socials can be whatever they want to be and we’re getting about 50 men along each time, young, old and of all professions, persuasions, abilities and interests. There’s a real simplicity in the support structure that we’ve created, but there is so much power in it; it’s for a reason and that reason is recovery,” he said. The Men’s Socials are held every second Tuesday, details www. theknollstudio.com Bags on the Go - Studio Village Community Centre, Oxenford When the Christmas night storm hit Oxenford, the Community Development Manager of the Studio Village Community Centre Jennifer Schofield knew her holiday was over and there was hard work to be done. “We were badly hit, and I knew straight away an emergency community recovery was about to start because we’ve been here before with floods and fire and all manner of natural disasters,” she said. That recovery meant the distribution Jennifer Schofield ,Community Development Manager, Studio Village Community Centre

7 Adopt a larger-than-life love. Animal Welfare League QLD is putting the call out for new best friends. Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) is thrilled to announce its eye-catching and heart-warming campaign to raise awareness about big dogs in shelters. The campaign’s objective is to inject fun and positivity about big dog ownership and promote the benefits of rescuing or fostering a big dog. At the moment, AWLQ is inundated with medium to large sized dogs and are hoping the campaign will inspire people to consider the many positives of owning a big dog. AWLQ Marketing and Communications Manager, Caroline Esera, said adopting or fostering a big dog is a really big deal. “Big dogs have just as much love and enjoyment to give as smaller dogs. And right now we have so many very loving big dogs waiting patiently for their forever homes,” she said. “Larger dogs often face much longer waits for adoption and it’s tough on them. By choosing to adopt, you are saving a big dog’s life – but you’re also saving the next dog you help make room for.” Anyone who chooses to adopt during the campaign will receive a complimentary Big Dog adoption pack thanks to AWLQ’s partners, complete with an ActiveDog big dog harness or collar and lead, a Savour Life food pack, training and behavioural support videos and a 21 day cooling off period. “If people can’t adopt, fostering is a wonderful way to help these dogs take a much-needed respite from the shelter, enhancing their exposure to potential adopters and improving their overall wellbeing.” Ms Esera said. “And if you can’t foster or adopt, making a donation is the best way you can help support the animals in our care. It typically costs AWLQ $750 to care for and rehome a dog, so it’s a big expense for us to bear and we can only do it with the support of the community.” Ms Esera added. AWLQ is urging people to adopt a larger-than-life love this winter and consider opening their homes to a big dog. You will save their life. And they will change yours. An average of one in every five blood and plasma donors has cancelled or rescheduled their donations due to cold and flu symptoms each week during winter. This means hundreds of donor chairs across Queensland have sat empty each day due to people calling in sick. The drop-off has prompted Australian Red Cross Lifeblood to urgently call for a further 1,000 Queenslanders over the next week to help replenish stock. “After months where cancellation rates due to illness were at their highest, now is the time to enjoy the warm glow that comes with giving blood and saving lives,” said Lifeblood Spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh. “As a nation we need thousands of blood and plasma donations every day. Therefore, we need more people to become regular donors. If more eligible Aussies start donating, especially when our regular donors are off sick, they too might get hooked on that positive feeling that comes from saving lives. If you are feeling healthy and well, step up and join the donor movement, and help us fill those empty donor chairs,” Belinda added. Every week, Australia needs around 33,000 donations to meet demand and Lifeblood will struggle to meet patient needs if cancellations continue and appointments aren’t filled coming off the back of the months when cold and flu rates peak. Just over 3% of people in Australia donate blood and plasma regularly, however it’s estimated up to 57% of the adult population are eligible to donate, which is an extra 10 million people who could roll up their sleeves. “We know donors feel so disappointed when they have to call in sick for a donation, but for us the most disappointing thing is when empty spots go unfilled especially when we know there are millions of people who could help,” explained Belinda. Knowing when blood is needed is now simpler than ever with the launch of the Lifeblood Blood Supply Update in June. With the nation’s blood supply levels now available to view in real-time online, it’s hoped that more people will donate more often, especially if they know that their specific blood type is needed. “We rely on the generosity of donors to provide vital blood products to people undergoing cancer treatment, living with blood disorders, needing surgery, or even women giving birth. You never know when you, or someone you love, might require blood, plasma, or platelets to survive, so make yourself cosy in a donor centre this winter and give someone the gift of life. The best way to find out your blood type is to book a donation at your local donor centre,” said Belinda. Donors who are affected by cold and flu symptoms can give blood at least seven days after making a full recovery. You can book a donation now by calling 13 14 95 or book online at lifeblood.com.au or on the DonateBlood app. Record Cancellations: Call for People to Donate

The club was formed and adopted the slogan “Working in our Community’ and much has happened since 2018 with a number of signature events now firmly on the local yearly community calendar. The community events are the Annual Santa Run – a favourite of the locals at the end of the year in conjunction with our community partners, The Ormeau Rural Fire Brigade. Other major fundraisers are the annual Rotary Charity Golf Day held at Gainsborough Greens Golf Course and the now very popular, Rotary Teddy Bears Picnic. Both fundraisers have contributed to several charities both local and surrounding. A big thank you to Michael Crandon for providing the hospitality and location for the evening . The meeting was special in that five new members were welcomed to the club on the night. We also welcomed guests who came to learn more about the club and the work that we do. The community can get involved through workshops and community sessions like the tree planting.” “We have already made some huge strides with our recovery plans including restoring all damaged parks and community infrastructure, removing 77,153 truckloads of waste, and injecting cash into the impacted community through grants and vouchers.” The City provided the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital funding, through the Disaster Recovery Grant Program, to provide treatment to wildlife injured during the disaster event which resulted in a surge of admissions. The hospital saw 120 new admissions in one day alone during the event. They establish regulations and a framework for governance, but due to the absence of any grown-ups to provide guidance, the youngsters ultimately become aggressive and cruel, with rising tension caused by fear and power. The disturbing tale portrays the children’s journey into turmoil and indicates that the inherent nature of humanity is barbarous.
