The YS Department is relatively new, with an emerging set of problems to tackle. One of the key challenges is the small proportion of youth offenders who commit a disproportionately large number of offences. The YJ Act has been amended leading to more appropriate bail restrictions for repeat young offenders. YJ coordinates and works closely with other related organisations including the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and volunteer groups, seeking to minimise the risk of initial and repeat offending behaviour from young people. There is no simple solution, tackling youth crime represents a complex challenge, and the victims deserve a solution. A warning has been put out regarding a particularly nasty scam: the National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC), scam. Scammers appear to call from a legitimate number, advising the intended victim that their number is being used in a scam in China; first trust is built up before there is an offer to help. The other and more obvious frauds continue to proliferate including online bargains, cashing in on loyalty points, misplaced parcels, ATO requests (I received one on Friday), etc. As always, do not give money or personal or financial information and do not click on any links. If in doubt, hang up, delete and if you need support, contact IDCARE on 1800 595 160. Please be careful, Australia is a preferred target and many of us are vulnerable, spread the word to be vigilant! We also received messages from the vital services that keep our community safe. QPS stress two important messages: ‘No,’ to domestic violence - perpetrators will always be held accountable, please report on suspicious activity, the help lines are: 1800RESPECT (1800 737 7320) and DVConnect: 1800 811 811 (Womersline). ‘Yes,’ to keeping your possessions safe: remember to Lock it of Lose it! The Firees hosted a splendid event at John Siganto Park on July 28th and shared the important warning that spring and summer are likely to be dangerous seasons given the profusion of fuel in our area. Dry grass may not have been seen as a potential danger in the past but given the unusual weather patterns, it now represents a serious threat; the problem being that many homes are at risk if tall grass is not removed, please bring out the lawn mower and cut the grass back. In response to the request for more informal gatherings, the Meeting Place (address below) is hosting coffee mornings on Saturday mornings. 7 Graffiti removal program cleans up the Gold Coast Mayor and artist Zowie Baumgart The City’s Artbox program has expanded to a further 23 locations across the Gold Coast to help wipe out graffiti. Artbox is an initiative that was introduced by the City to reduce graffiti on traffic signal boxes in high visibility areas while beautifying neighbourhoods and supporting local artists. Mayor Tom Tate said City expenditure on graffiti removal for 2023-24 was approximately $700,000, with City officers removing close to 7000 incidents. “Graffiti has a negative impact on the community, decreasing actual and perceived safety in our neighbourhoods, as well as costing the City a substantial amount of money,” said Mayor Tom Tate. “The unique artwork that we see on our traffic signal boxes helps prevent graffiti in highly visible areas by taking away a blank canvas for vandals and in turn reducing the need for removal costs. This is a hugely popular incentive for local artists and gives them a platform to show their creativity while contributing to a clean and safe community.” There are now over 190 artworks installed on traffic signal boxes which were often a target for vandals given their visible locations at major intersections. The City invested $23,000 into this phase of Artbox, costing approximately $1000 per traffic signal box. Next year, the Artbox initiative will include the Helensvale pedestrian underpass thanks to a $350,000 public arts grant through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. The City will go out to tender later this year to appoint an artist for the Helensvale pedestrian underpass safety project, which also includes the installation of other safety strategies in the space. Artbox is a program used in collaboration with other City-led initiatives to reduce and remove graffiti from public assets and structures. Graffiti can be reported via the City App, City website, or the Graffiti Hotline on 07 5667 5974. Free graffiti removal kits are available for residents and businesses to remove small amounts of graffiti from their property. Artbox is delivered as part of the City’s 2027 Community Safety Program, helping create spaces that are safe, clean, and free from graffiti. 9 Look out there are native animals about This winter, Gold Coasters are being urged to slow down on our roads and keep a look out to help protect native animals. As well as a longer dusk and dawn, koalas and other native animals have their breeding seasons in late-winter to summer and during this time are more mobile, so drivers are being asked to be extra vigilant for wildlife. “Our native animals are important residents of the Gold Coast and we need to give them a helping hand,” Mayor Tom Tate said. “Vehicle strikes are among the greatest threats to koalas and other native animals, so we ask everyone to take extra care by slowing down, being vigilant, and giving the wildlife the space they need. “Through the Our Natural City Strategy 2032, we are committed to protecting the natural beauty of the City and our koalas and other native animals are a vital part of that.” The City has a number of road management and habitat initiatives to help protect native animals including: • Installing flashing wildlife signs • Installing fauna fencing • Buying and protecting land for native animal habitat • Providing Wildcare with an animal ambulance • Restoring native habitat through tree planting During their breeding season, koalas and other native animals are more mobile, which increases the chance they will cross a road or venture into areas close to humans and pets. Echidnas are among the first native animals to begin their breeding season and can be seen from midwinter moving about in “echidna trains”, making them vulnerable to vehicle strike. Motorists and pedestrians should call Wildcare on 07 5527 2444 if they see an animal injured or in distress. Deceased animals can be reported to the City on 07 5667 5976. Wildcare will make sure injured animals are transported safely to places like Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, where they will be treated, rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Lemon Meringue Tarts • 2 ½ sheets frozen shortcrust pastry, thawed • 1 cup water • ½ cup lemon juice • ½ cup sugar • ¼ cup cornflour • 2 egg yolks • 30g butter • 1 finely grated lemon zest • 2 egg whites • 1/3 cup caster sugar • 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice Prep 20m | Cook 15m | Makes 12 Preheat oven to hot, 200C. Lightly grease each recess of a (1/4 cup) muffin pan. Using a 10cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from pastry. Ease pastry into prepared pans. Chill for 15 minutes. Prick bases and bake for 5-10 mins. Meanwhile, combine water, lemon juice, sugar and cornflour in a saucepan, until smooth. Bring to boil, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 mins. Stir in yolks, butter and rind and allow to cool slightly. Spoon into prepared cases, leveling top. Chill until firm. To make the meringue, in a clean, dry bowl, using an electric mixer, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating until sugar dissolves and foam is stiff, thick and glossy. Beat in vinegar. Increase oven to very hot (220C). Dollop meringue roughly over filling in each tart. Bake for 4-5 mins until lightly browned. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container.
