For too long, it has enjoyed guaranteed inflows and minimal scrutiny. However, a growing tide of customer discontent is forcing a much-needed spotlight on the sector’s practices. Key Issues: • Lengthy delays and inadequate support when processing claims for death benefits and disability entitlements. This is particularly concerning for funds like Cbus and AustralianSuper, which have been the subject of public criticism. • Regulatory bodies, such as ASIC, have identified systemic issues within the industry, indicating that these problems are not isolated incidents but rather indicative of broader operational failures. • Questions have been raised about the governance practices of super funds, particularly regarding board oversight and executive accountability. This is relevant to funds like Hesta, which has faced scrutiny over its investment decisions. • Concerns have been expressed about the transparency of investment practices and fee structures within the industry. Regulatory Scrutiny: ASIC and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) are taking a more proactive approach to oversee the industry. Recent regulatory actions and investigations highlight the growing pressure on super funds to improve their performance. Consumer Advocacy: Consumer advocates are calling for stricter regulations and increased transparency to protect the interests of superannuation members. They argue that funds should be held accountable for their actions and that stronger oversight is necessary to prevent future issues. The Road Ahead: The future of the Australian superannuation industry is uncertain. While regulatory scrutiny and public pressure may drive positive change, the industry must prioritise the needs of its members and demonstrate a commitment to improving customer service and governance. This is particularly important for large funds like Cbus, AustralianSuper, and Hesta, which have a significant impact on the lives of millions of Australians.
