Top of the list are requests from an increasing number of members regarding action to be taken to counter scams. We have been talking to Shendelle, who is retained by the banks for fraud protection. Her advice follows. Be vigilant, scams arise from new and unexpected sources like ads on social media or community boards, TV commercials, dating sites, apparent professional contacts such as lawyers, relators, and banks, even when presented as friends and family, basically anywhere. One scam that is catching out unaware victims is email comprised communications. If in doubt, independently check the source. Never provide your ID to an unknown source and never respond to supplied contacts, first google and check from your own resources. Send $1 and confirm receipt before making a payment in full. Millions of dollars are lost because these simple precautions are ignored. As always, If in doubt the National Anti-Scam Centre urges you to contact www.scamwatch.gov.au to report suspicious activity and to advise if you have been scammed. Next, it is worth repeating the advice of the QPS: lock it or lose it. This is coupled with advice form the Disaster Management Team: be prepared, this is the cyclone, fire, and flood season. All this advice suggests we are in a crime centre. However, our district has performed better than either of our western or northern neighbours. We are showing remarkable resilience to attacks by the opportunistic youth and those pesky adverse weather patterns. However, the firees and others warn to avoid complacency. If in doubt, look at the devastation arising from floods in Valencia or the fires in Los Angeles – both reported to have been unexpected. Walk around the lake at Damian Leeding Park – that is the advice from our community spirited members to anyone seeking relief from stress. Four kilometres of tranquillity represents the ideal cure. Perhaps invite a friend, the elderly and infirm gain special benefits from a bit of exercise if accompanied. Great to meet mums with babies and dog walkers; early risers are particularly energetic if you are seeking an adrenalin rush. See you there. New members are keen to know the objectives of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW). We offer a community led safety and awareness program that aims to prevent crime, stop social isolation and increase the safety, security, and quality of life for everyone in our community. Please share this with your colleagues, we are keen to recruit more members. Our next NHW meeting will be on May the 13th with a 7.00 pm start. The location is the usual Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. In addition to our members, we look forward to welcoming representatives from State Parliament, Division 2, QPS, DEMU and our trusty firees together with continuing advice on the avoidance of scams from Shendelle. This will be a great evening with a raffle and snacks after the meeting. It continues to represent an excellent opportunity to make new friends. We hope that you can join us.
