Top of the list are requests from an increasing number of members regarding action to be taken to counter scams. We have been talking to Shendelle, who is retained by the banks for fraud protection. Her advice follows. Be vigilant, scams arise from new and unexpected sources like ads on social media or community boards, TV commercials, dating sites, apparent professional contacts such as lawyers, relators, and banks, even when presented as friends and family, basically anywhere. One scam that is catching out unaware victims is email comprised communications. If in doubt, independently check the source. Never provide your ID to an unknown source and never respond to supplied contacts, first google and check from your own resources. Send $1 and confirm receipt before making a payment in full. Millions of dollars are lost because these simple precautions are ignored. As always, If in doubt the National Anti-Scam Centre urges you to contact www.scamwatch.gov.au to report suspicious activity and to advise if you have been scammed. Next, it is worth repeating the advice of the QPS: lock it or lose it. This is coupled with advice form the Disaster Management Team: be prepared, this is the cyclone, fire, and flood season. All this advice suggests we are in a crime centre. However, our district has performed better than either of our western or northern neighbours. We are showing remarkable resilience to attacks by the opportunistic youth and those pesky adverse weather patterns. However, the firees and others warn to avoid complacency. If in doubt, look at the devastation arising from floods in Valencia or the fires in Los Angeles – both reported to have been unexpected. Walk around the lake at Damian Leeding Park – that is the advice from our community spirited members to anyone seeking relief from stress. Four kilometres of tranquillity represents the ideal cure. Perhaps invite a friend, the elderly and infirm gain special benefits from a bit of exercise if accompanied. Great to meet mums with babies and dog walkers; early risers are particularly energetic if you are seeking an adrenalin rush. See you there. New members are keen to know the objectives of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW). We offer a community led safety and awareness program that aims to prevent crime, stop social isolation and increase the safety, security, and quality of life for everyone in our community. Please share this with your colleagues, we are keen to recruit more members. Our next NHW meeting will be on May the 13th with a 7.00 pm start. The location is the usual Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. In addition to our members, we look forward to welcoming representatives from State Parliament, Division 2, QPS, DEMU and our trusty firees together with continuing advice on the avoidance of scams from Shendelle. This will be a great evening with a raffle and snacks after the meeting. It continues to represent an excellent opportunity to make new friends. We hope that you can join us. 5 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In our fast-paced lives, filled with digital screens and constant visual stimuli, it’s easy to overlook the significance of maintaining good eye health. However, regular checkups with an optometrist are not just a precautionary measure; they are essential for preserving the precious gift of sight and overall well-being. One of the primary reasons to prioritise optometric check-ups is the early detection of potential issues. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. An optometrist can detect these conditions through comprehensive eye exams, allowing for early intervention and effective management. Timely diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to the eyes and, in some cases, even save one’s vision. Moreover, optometrists are equipped with the expertise to address refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While it might be tempting to rely on over-the-counter reading glasses or online prescriptions, these solutions may not adequately address the unique visual needs of each individual. Optometrists tailor prescriptions based on a thorough understanding of the patient’s eye health, ensuring optimal vision correction. Regular eye check-ups are particularly crucial for children, as undetected vision problems can hinder their learning and development. Children may not always express vision concerns or even recognise them, making routine optometric visits essential for identifying and addressing potential issues early on. Good vision is integral to a child’s academic success and overall well-being. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. City acquires cleared land to restore to koala habitat A 146-hectare property to be restored for koala habitat and provide for future environmental offsets has been acquired by the City. The land, which links already existing conservation areas, was strategically chosen through the Koala Habitat Acquisition Program. “The Gold Coast has some of the most important koala habitat and populations in South East Queensland and we are committed to protecting and nurturing our koalas,” Mayor Tom Tate said. “City officers will now take steps to begin restoring cleared areas as koala habitat by planting native vegetation and removing any weeds. “Restoring this land is part of our work to support the long-term viability of the east Coomera koala population and secure a Northern Koala Corridor from Coomera and Pimpama through to the hinterland.” The acquired land connects Gainsborough Parklands, Hotham Creek Reserve, Old Wharf Road Parklands and Pimpama Conservation Area allowing for improved management, access, and fauna movement. The property also secures connectivity along 4 km of the Pimpama River and Hotham Creek, allowing the City to restore a buffer to improve regional water quality outcomes. The new parcel of land is another step the City is taking to help protect koalas which includes: • Implementing conservation programs for private landholders • Installing flashing “koala” road signs and fauna fencing Tickets: $40 Standard $30 (Concession, Bond students/staff/alumini) www.eventbrite.com.au Enquiries: Robina Literary Club 5580 9118

These changes will benefit our community by: • Helping maintain reliable and efficient bin collection services. • Contributing to reducing traffic congestion and improving the city's amenity. • Enhancing traffic, pedestrian, and truck driver safety. Stay ahead of the change by checking what your new schedule will be from March 2025 cityofgoldcoast.com.au/mybinday Residential bin days and times are changing in March 2025!

Residents urged to ‘favourite’ the Emergency Alert number to stay informed Queenslanders are being urged to update their phone settings to ‘favourite’ the Emergency Alert (EA) phone number, to stay informed during an emergency or disaster. Emergency Alert is the national telephone-based warning system used to send voice messages to landlines and text messages to mobile phones to warn people of emergencies. This includes dangerous weather with potentially severe impacts. An Emergency Alert is just one way for authorities to warn communities of a dangerous situation in the area and only issued when necessary. They are not issued for every circumstance but the message will include important, potentially life-saving directions which require you to take action to stay safe. You do not need to register to receive an Emergency Alert from the system which is sent from caller ID number: +61 444 444 444. Messages from +61 444 444 444 are not a scam, they are official phone warnings as part of a national geo-targeting emergency alert system. Residents are being asked to check the number is not blocked on their device and to add it to their ‘favourites’, so they don’t miss the alerts. If you follow these steps, even if your phone is set to ‘do not disturb’ you will still receive the alert, no matter what time of the day or night it is issued. Visit the Disaster Management website for the latest Emergency Alert details and for local area information on Local Government disaster dashboards. • For assistance with a life-threatening situation phone Triple Zero (000) immediately. • For assistance with non-life-threatening situations — such as help with a damaged roof or storm damage — phone SES on 132 500. • Keep up to date with the latest weather advice at Queensland Warnings Summary (bom.gov.au)
