The festive season seems to bring out the best and worst in terms of incidents in our district. Worst was the number of parcels lifted from doorsteps, up to one-quarter from one apartment block. Best would be the generous time extended to those who are less fortunate. If every household can offer a level of care to a person in need, our district will have made a generous contribution to this season of joy. Whatever the circumstances we wish you all a Happy New Year. welcoming strangers and finding out why they are in the vicinity – it is what NHW stands for! Please remember that free National Secure Your Home kits together with a home security checklist are available - visit the website for more information: www. secureyourhomeday.com.au. The Disaster and Emergency Management Unit (DEMU) are concerned that we are now entering the storm season. This is not a time for complacency as we could expect floods, fires, and even a cyclone during the next few months. The message is to please be prepared for the worst. Every household should enter this season with an emergency relief package (torch, water, basic foods, essential medication etc.) Heidi Turner and her team at the DEMU are available to provide advice and would welcome your call, she can be contacted direct on 07 5581 1580. Our next NHW meeting will be on February the 11th with a 7.00pm start. The location is the usual Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. In addition to our members, we look forward to welcoming representatives from State Parliament, Division 2, QPS, DEMU and of course the trusty firees. This will be a great evening and has always proved to be an excellent opportunity to make new friends. We hope that you can join us. Martin Mankowski Area Coordinator Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch Fraud provides a litany of bad experiences, attack from scammers seem to be relentless. Add to the range of offences are the sneaky attacks. One experience, sadly mine, was having an extra cost added to the cart while dire warnings are issued that the exclusive offer is about to expire – always check what you think you have ordered before pressing the pay button. Another reminder is the cautious tale issued by banks: never reveal your account or pin number. My bank called me to confirm a transaction, needed my name, email, address and then surprisingly my account number. I refused. It was a Mexican stand-off until my account manager called and reconciled the situation. Conclusion, even be cautious when you are dealing with your bank. Things can only get worse; scammers are now pretending to rescue you from a potential fraud and of course the protection offered requires all your personal details. If you are not convinced the source is genuine, do not proceed. If in doubt the National Anti-Scam Centre urges you to contact www.scamwatch.gov. au to report suspicious activity and to advise if you have been scammed. With the festive season behind us are we able to relax? Probably not! The realisation of a massive over-spend during the joyful period leads the opportunistic youth, and others, to revisit potential soft targets. ‘Lock it or Lose it’ particularly applies during this period. Homes, offices, cars, and electronic appliances are all vulnerable assets. Visual and audio signals are good deterrents such as security lights, noisy TVs, and barking dogs – avoid the front of your property looking neglected, appear to be a highly active resident. In our neighbourhood, we make a point of

We know what it feels like. We can write it down.’ A beautiful, razor-sharp debut by Sarah Handyside, Instructions for Heartbreak is a life-affirming novel about female friendship, self-love and how to survive a broken heart. What if heartbreak came with a manual? It starts with a late-night knock on the door. Thirtysomething best friends Dee, Liv and Rosa share a flat in south London, while Katie, the fourth member of their friendship group, lives close by with her long-term boyfriend. But, when Katie’s nine-year relationship ends – suddenly and brutally – she turns up on their doorstep with no idea where she’ll live, what to do next or how to do anything after spending so long with her life entwined with someone else’s. Out comes the martini shaker (an old, well-washed gherkin jar) and, with an unused sketchbook, an idea. They’ll make Katie the handbook that she needs to process her heartbreak and start rebuilding her life. There are notes on tears, hangovers and roast chicken, scribblings about music, new bedding and pure, white-hot rage. Everywhere there is permission to feel agony and elation and anger, and everything that is extraordinary and appalling. But Katie is not the only one nursing a broken heart. Rosa is a hopeless romantic, despite still reeling from her ex’s infidelity. Scarred by her ex’s parting words, Dee is committed to being commitmentfree. And while Liv knows that breaking up with her girlfriend was what she wanted, she can’t help but wonder if she did the right thing . . 10 Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 – one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history – and the McCarthyism that gripped America in the 1950s. THE CRUCIBLE is a story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice, culminating in a violent climax, is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.
