Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) provides a community led safety and awareness program that aims to prevent crime, stop social isolation and increase the safety, security, and quality of life for everyone in our community. Our NHW team provides information to 2,000 homes in the Division 2 area. We keep in close contact with the QPS, (the Queensland Police Service), the Firees, the DEMU (the Disaster and Emergency Management Unit) and the State Government as well as other affiliated groups. We regard ourselves as a fun-loving and relaxed group of volunteers with a strong wish to serve the community. Our members attended the DEMU workshop last month which we found to be most informative. Heidi Turner, the Senior Officer provided useful insights into future challenges that require urgent preparation now. The DEMU Centre is a state-of-the-art facility seen as essential given our region’s exposure to fires, floods, and cyclones. As the season approaches the advice provided is to get ready now. Every household should have an emergency relief package (torch, water, basic foods, essential medication etc.) Heidi and her team can be contacted direct on 07 5581 1580. Scammers continue to launch new tricks to steal our identity and our hard-earned cash. You should be warned of a particularly nasty scam which has caused undue hardship. The National Anti-Scam Centre is warning us that criminals are impersonating charities and offering fake financial assistance schemes to target those of us who are experiencing financial hardship. There are fake emergency relief services, rental assistance plans, and other assistance programs that are scamming the most vulnerable out of their limited funds. In one example, the scam offered a noninterest loan to assist rental payments; the victims provided all the personal details requested only to find that money was then diverted from their Centrelink payments. The usual rules apply, never provide personal information or cash unless you are convinced the source is genuine – best way to do this is to make independent enquires. Please contact www.scamwatch.gov.au to report suspicious activity and most importantly to advise if you have been scammed. Just a reminder that free National Secure Your Home kits are available and include a home security checklist with tips on securing your home. As always, the overriding message is, ‘Lock it or Lose It.’ Please visit the website for more information: www. secureyourhomeday.com.au. Our next NHW event will be on the 10th of December 2024 (Christmas Party) with a 7.00 pm start, location at the Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. Our annual general meeting will take place at the start of the event. We are grateful for the strong relationship we enjoy with the QPS operating from the Coomera Station and we are promised a stimulating report on steps being taken to prevent crime. The DEMU will also share important messages on safety preparations. Both the QPS and DEMU will encourage those who attend our meeting to log onto their app to ensure information is shared as soon as it becomes available. In addition, we hope to hear from our local community leaders being our Div 2 Councillor, and our State Member for Parliament. We encourage visitors to take advantage of informal meetings once the main event is finished. Given the popularity of the raffle supported by light refreshment, we will continue with this tradition. You are assured of a stimulating evening, and we look forward to welcoming you. Martin Mankowski, Area Coordinator Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch
