OPEN 24/7 Watergum and Sea World Foundation are thrilled to announce the 2024/2025 season launch of TurtleWatch GC, continuing their collaborative mission to protect and monitor vulnerable turtle populations along southeast Queensland’s coastline. Supported by the City of Gold Coast’s Catchment and Citizen Science Grants Program, TurtleWatch GC empowers local communities to help conserve marine turtles through citizen science initiatives. Running from November 2024 to March 2025, this season’s efforts focus on the critical nesting and hatching period along the coast, and TurtleWatch GC is calling on volunteers to join the initiative and make a meaningful impact on marine turtle conservation. TurtleWatch GC, spearheaded by Watergum in partnership with Sea World Foundation, has become integral to local turtle conservation, collecting essential data to support research and management strategies. This season, the program will enhance its focus on the nesting and hatching activities of loggerhead and green turtles, both of which are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and human impacts. Caitlin Mandrusiak, TurtleWatch GC Coordinator at Watergum, emphasized the value of community involvement: “Our volunteers are the backbone of this project. Their contributions enable us to gather accurate data shared with conservation authorities to better understand turtle populations and implement protective measures.” The Sea World Foundation, a long-term advocate for marine conservation, continues to support TurtleWatch GC, helping the program reach a broader audience, involve more volunteers, and expand conservation efforts. Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Coordinator Siobhan Houlihan noted, “We’re proud to be part of an initiative that not only protects these species but also inspires the community to engage in marine conservation.” The TurtleWatch GC program invites community members to monitor turtle nesting sites along local beaches. Volunteers receive training to identify nesting signs, report data, and help protect nests from predators and environmental hazards. Whether joining TurtleWalk patrols or serving as a Turtle Nest Guardian, participants play an active role in safeguarding vulnerable turtle populations. For information, please visit Watergum’s website or contact TurtleWatch GC at turtlewatch@watergum.org or 07 2103 5796. Turtle nesting season kickstarts TurtleWatch Gold Coast program

3 Use it or Lose It! 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX $150 OFF COMPLETE PAIR PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au Book your appointment today! If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. Paris Miki Helensvale accepts all health funds, so book your appointment and make the most of your benefits. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 23 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Maximise Your Health Cover Don’t kiss your optical benefits goodbye! Don’t forget to use your Optical Benefit before 31st December

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) provides a community led safety and awareness program that aims to prevent crime, stop social isolation and increase the safety, security, and quality of life for everyone in our community. Our NHW team provides information to 2,000 homes in the Division 2 area. We keep in close contact with the QPS, (the Queensland Police Service), the Firees, the DEMU (the Disaster and Emergency Management Unit) and the State Government as well as other affiliated groups. We regard ourselves as a fun-loving and relaxed group of volunteers with a strong wish to serve the community. Our members attended the DEMU workshop last month which we found to be most informative. Heidi Turner, the Senior Officer provided useful insights into future challenges that require urgent preparation now. The DEMU Centre is a state-of-the-art facility seen as essential given our region’s exposure to fires, floods, and cyclones. As the season approaches the advice provided is to get ready now. Every household should have an emergency relief package (torch, water, basic foods, essential medication etc.) Heidi and her team can be contacted direct on 07 5581 1580. Scammers continue to launch new tricks to steal our identity and our hard-earned cash. You should be warned of a particularly nasty scam which has caused undue hardship. The National Anti-Scam Centre is warning us that criminals are impersonating charities and offering fake financial assistance schemes to target those of us who are experiencing financial hardship. There are fake emergency relief services, rental assistance plans, and other assistance programs that are scamming the most vulnerable out of their limited funds. In one example, the scam offered a noninterest loan to assist rental payments; the victims provided all the personal details requested only to find that money was then diverted from their Centrelink payments. The usual rules apply, never provide personal information or cash unless you are convinced the source is genuine – best way to do this is to make independent enquires. Please contact www.scamwatch.gov.au to report suspicious activity and most importantly to advise if you have been scammed. Just a reminder that free National Secure Your Home kits are available and include a home security checklist with tips on securing your home. As always, the overriding message is, ‘Lock it or Lose It.’ Please visit the website for more information: www. secureyourhomeday.com.au. Our next NHW event will be on the 10th of December 2024 (Christmas Party) with a 7.00 pm start, location at the Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. Our annual general meeting will take place at the start of the event. We are grateful for the strong relationship we enjoy with the QPS operating from the Coomera Station and we are promised a stimulating report on steps being taken to prevent crime. The DEMU will also share important messages on safety preparations. Both the QPS and DEMU will encourage those who attend our meeting to log onto their app to ensure information is shared as soon as it becomes available. In addition, we hope to hear from our local community leaders being our Div 2 Councillor, and our State Member for Parliament. We encourage visitors to take advantage of informal meetings once the main event is finished. Given the popularity of the raffle supported by light refreshment, we will continue with this tradition. You are assured of a stimulating evening, and we look forward to welcoming you. Martin Mankowski, Area Coordinator Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch

5 Are you making common investing mistakes that could derail your Financial Goals? Many investors, both seasoned and novice, fall victim to common pitfalls that can significantly hinder their financial growth. Understanding these mistakes is the first step to avoiding them. • Herd mentality: Don't blindly follow the crowd. When everyone's buying, it might be time to consider selling, and vice versa. • Past performance as future predictor: Remember, past performance is not indicative of future results. • Ignoring economic cycles: Understand that markets fluctuate with economic cycles. Don't let fear dictate your investment decisions. • Letting emotions cloud judgment: Avoid impulsive decisions based on fear or greed. Stick to your long-term plan. • Overtrading: Frequent trading can increase transaction costs and reduce your overall returns. • Overcomplicating your portfolio: Keep it simple. A diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds can often outperform complex strategies. • Underinvesting in growth assets: Early in your investing journey, focus on growth assets like stocks to maximise long-term returns. • Market timing: Trying to time the market is a risky endeavour. A consistent, disciplined approach is a more effective strategy. To avoid these pitfalls and achieve your financial goals, consider consulting with SK’s qualified financial advisors. We can provide personalised advice and help you develop a tailored investment strategy. How can SK help you? All Ages - Entry is free. 135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise www.hota.com.au Tick cases on the rise in South East QLD Animal Welfare League Queensland calls on pet owners to be vigilant this tick season. Tick season has started in South East Queensland and Animal Welfare League Queensland’s (AWLQ) Community Vet Clinics (CVCs) have been seeing a rise in tick-related cases in recent weeks. Since August, AWLQ’s CVCs have already treated 26 tickrelated cases in both cats and dogs (including Border Collie pup, Skylah, pictured right) with this year’s mild winter and recent warmer weather likely boosting local tick populations. Paralysis ticks are parasites that attach themselves to animals in order to drain their blood. As they do this, they secrete a toxin that affects animals’ nervous systems, leading to sickness or death. Pet owners are urged to take preventive steps against paralysis ticks, including ensuring their pet’s tick medication is consistently up to date every 30 days and thoroughly examining pets daily. Remember to check between their toes, inside their ears, nose, mouth and their belly. “Prevention is a lot better and cheaper than cure. Ensuring your dog or cat is consistently up-to-date with their tick prevention medication is paramount,” said Dr Dia Charalambous, AWLQ Vet Director. “Keep an eye out for any symptoms. If you notice symptoms or you do find a tick on your pet, the best thing to do is take them into your local vet clinic. If you do remove a tick from your pet yourself, ensure you take the remainder of the tick with you to your vet so they can identify it.” When the tick first attaches to the animal, it won’t have any signs of paralysis. If you can find the tick early before enough toxins have been injected into their system, it can help prevent any symptoms of paralysis. Common signs and symptoms that your pet may be suffering from paralysis tick toxins include: • Vomiting or dry retching • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Excessive salivating • Coughing or loud panting • Wobbly gait • Weakness in the hind limbs, progressing to total paralysis Ticks often live in bushland or scrubby areas. Avoiding tick habitats can also reduce risk. Ensure you consult your vet about the most suitable treatment for your pet. Friends President Mary Woods will officially open the exhibition at 4pm on Thursday November 28. All are welcome. Exhibiting artists include Sandra De Leacy, Anneke Schuck and Cathryn Coutts, who will be joined again by members of the Friends Botanical Art Group. Their artwork will include paintings, drawings, porcelain and jewellery, inspired by the plants and animals found in the Botanic Gardens. Sandra De Leacy has been making a range of hand painted porcelain forms with designs, colours and textures inspired by the flora and fauna in the gardens. Her delightful paintings of birds on porcelain tiles will be of great interest to exhibition visitors. Anneke Schuck enjoys experimenting in a variety of art forms. Painting on porcelain for many years, she has recently added a dimension to her porcelain jewellery by weaving wire around a medallion as well as fusing glass to porcelain. Exhibition visitors last year appreciated watching her making the jewellery and discussing the techniques directly with the artist. Cathryn Coutts has been focusing on significant trees in the Gardens, specifically Eucalyptus trees found growing on the Gold Coast. Following up on her Eucalyptus drawing and identification workshops held earlier this year for Native Plants Queensland, these paintings show a detailed rendering of the bark, flowers and fruit to help viewers identify different species, all of which can be seen in the Botanic Gardens, 230 Ashmore Road, Benowa.
