3 We offer free breast screens for women aged 40 and over. Breast screening is most effective for women aged 50 to 74. Our appointments are quick and can be made outside working hours. Book today. One in 7 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Regular breast screening helps save lives by finding breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. A breast screen looks for very small breast cancers that can’t be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast screens (screening mammograms) for eligible people 40 years and older, with individuals welcome to continue screening beyond age 74. Women aged between 50 and 74 are actively encouraged to screen every two years, as the benefits of screening mammography have been shown to be most effective for this group. While early detection can increase treatment options, only one in every two local women aged 50 to 74 participates in the free breast screening program within recommended time frames. Of more than 34,500 people who screened at the BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service last financial year, 1-in-10 stated they speak a language other than English at home. To help make it easier for people to learn more about breast screening and why it’s important, particularly for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, BreastScreen Queensland has recently released a suite of new translated information resources. 4 Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch Once again, we return to the topic of youth crime – an enduring theme, by far the most talked about subject. When a crime is about to be committed there are two important considerations. The first is how to deter the criminal. Being vigilant, being reactive to an adverse intrusion and of course ensuing your property is secure often make a difference. A resident at Biggera Waters reported that security lights, dogs barking, his angry reaction and a profusion of NHW signs acted as a suitable deterrent. The second consideration is how to act if access is gained – run and hide! If possible, better to be compliant than aggressive. If confrontation is inevitable, choose a measured response; knifing a tenyear old, unarmed intruder might make the occupier the guilty party! While less regularly discussed, disaster management is likely to become a hot topic. The Disaster and Emergency Management Unit (DEMU) is running workshops to ensure the community is better informed. Discussions include risk assessment, planning and communication, plus resources and infrastructure available. To learn more please contact the DEMU on 07 5582 9395. Weather patterns are proving to be extreme and unpredictable, strong winds, uncontrollable fires and catastrophic flooding are all possible in the coming months. It has been noted that the level of interest in disaster management is at its highest just after a disaster, which is unfortunate timing. Please make appropriate preparations now. The National Anti-Scam Centre is recording some success; bank-based frauds are declining, good to know our transactions are safer. We seem to be more vulnerable when taking an initiative like cashing points or buying goods, with older people being the most at risk. It is surprisingly easy to be scammed, almost happened to me again. Greater awareness of the dangers is essential. Remember never to give money or personal or financial information and not to click on any unfamiliar links: hang-up or delete and contact IDCARE on 1800 595 160. Queensland Road Safety Week has just finished with important messages from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) who are promoting a StreetSmarts state-wide initiative. Reference is made to the ‘Fatal Five’ – speeding, drink driving, failing to wear seatbelts and driving while tired or distracted. These are major contributors to lives lost on our roads; what is particularly tragic is that all are avoidable. One statistic is most disturbing, 5% of motor vehicles account for 27% of lives lost – motor cyclists are the most vulnerable. Getting closer to some of the more vulnerable members of our community can act as a deterrent. 5 Aging Eyes: Common Issues Your eyes change as you age. Some problems become more common as you get older, although they can affect anyone at any age. Presbyopia is when you can’t clearly see close objects or small print. It’s a normal process that happens slowly over your lifetime. You may not notice any change until around age 40. It’s easy to correct with reading glasses and contacts. Floaters are tiny spots or specks that drift across your field of vision. You’ll probably notice them in well-lit rooms, when looking at a bright screen, or outdoors on a bright day. If you notice a sudden change in the type or number of spots or flashes you see, visit your eye doctor as soon as you can. Dry eyes happen when your tear glands can’t make enough tears or produce low-quality tears. Your eyes might itch, burn, or turn red. It’s rare, but if you don’t take care of it, you could lose some vision. Your eye doctor may suggest a humidifier in your home or special eye drops that simulate tears. Doctors treat severe cases with tear duct plugs, prescription eye drops, or surgery. Cataracts are cloudy areas that cover all or part of the lens of your eye. In a healthy eye, the lens is clear like a camera lens; light passes right through it and hits tissue at the back of your eye. That’s the retina, and it processes images. Cataracts block the lens and make it hard for you to see. They often form slowly, without pain, redness, or tearing. Some stay small and don’t affect your sight. If they cause problems, your doctor can remove them with surgery and replace your lens with an artificial version. Glaucoma is a disease that affects the eye's optic nerve. It typically results from too much pressure inside your eye. If the normal flow of the watery fluid between your cornea and lens is blocked, the fluid and pressure from it build up. If you don’t catch it early, it can lead to permanent vision loss and blindness. You may not have symptoms or pain early on, so get your eyes checked regularly. Treatment ranges from prescription eye drops and oral medications to surgery. Retinal disorders affect this thin lining on the back of the eye. It’s made up of cells that collect visual images and pass them on to your brain. Problems with your retina affect this image transfer. They include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vessel occlusions, and detached retina. Early diagnosis and treatment will help you keep your vision. The Reconnection for Resilience Community Grants Program provided 15 community grants of up to $5000 for local not-for-profit organisations, healthcare organisations, sporting clubs and primary care providers in the storm and flood hit areas. “While the property rebuilds continue, so are the psychological health recoveries of those residents directly affected by the storms,” GCPHN CEO Matt Carrodus said. “Through programs that foster ongoing resilience, we are helping to empower people with the resources and support necessary to complete their recovery journeys,” he said. Mr Carrodus said funded activities included programs aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing through support embedded in addressing social isolation, sport and exercise classes, art therapy, skills development initiatives, community BBQs and more. We highlight a couple amazing organisations that are cleverly using their grants funding to build better local communities: Fierce Females – Westfield Shopping Centre, Helensvale Created by women for women, Fierce But Jennifer said next time it will be different. “One of the things we realised is that we were sending people away with their emergency supplies in boxes and we thought that was undignified,” she said. “So, we created Bags on the Go, with everything packed in a sturdy reusable suitcase that people can wheel out of our centre with pride. “The bags are the packed with donated toiletries and essential disaster recovery items like battery powered radios, weatherproof document holders, towels and face washers, washing powder, coins for laundromats, deodorants and other hygiene products. “They open the suitcase to find most of the things that people would need if they were faced with an emergency accommodation situation,” she said. The Studio Village Community Centre was established 30 years ago by the local community. It’s one of 140 Neighbourhood and Community Centres (NCC’s) around Queensland responding to loneliness and social isolation. On a day-to-day basis it provides a community garden, day activities, bowls, craft classes, new parent support and playgroups, and plenty more. “Our clients are diverse and in the aftermath of the disaster we also welcomed everyone to explore our community wellbeing and mental health services,” Jennifer said. “At times of need we’re always there to provide physical and emotional support and Bags on the Go is just another innovative and locally tailored example of how we put grants monies like these to the very best use,” she said. https://studiovillage.com.au/ Reconnection for Resilience: Grants Deliver Late Christmas Cheer Females gives participants the skills and knowledge to live life without harm. Women over the age of 15, many mothers and daughters, take part in a 10-week program to learn how to improve and maintain personal safety during and after stressful events. It’s a unique program that fosters resilience and community connection by blending psychology, conflict resolution and mixed martial arts techniques. And according to trainer Jade Hurley, the Women’s Wellbeing and Resilience Skill Building Workshops have been especially important in the aftermath of the Christmas storms. “These workshops have provided a safe and supportive space for women to re-build their confidence, learn practical safety skills, and foster resilience in the face of adversity and stressful situations,” Jade said. “By focusing on both physical and emotional well-being, the workshops have been instrumental in helping participants navigate the challenges, both physical and emotional, brought on by the storms. “This has empowered them to move forward with newfound strength and a greater sense of community connection,” she said. www.fiercefemales.com.au Bags on the Go - Studio Village Community Centre, Oxenford When the Christmas night storm hit Oxenford, the Community Development Manager of the Studio Village Community Centre Jennifer Schofield knew her holiday was over and there was hard work to be done. “We were badly hit, and I knew straight away an emergency community recovery was about to start because we’ve been here before with floods and fire and all manner of natural disasters,” she said. That recovery meant the distribution of emergency food and water supplies and toiletries and other essentials for people driven from their homes or those staying put to comprehend what had just happened amid prolonged power outages.
