BreastScreen Queensland has a new mobile van that will be at Pimpama City Shopping Centre until 5 September 2024. The van visits seven sites annually, in addition to the permanent clinics at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale, Robina and Southport. Whilst the permanent clinics can be accessed all year, the mobile van is taken to convenient spots to reduce travel time for locals. “Taking the mobile van to shopping centres can make it easier for our clients to attend and fit their screen into their usual visit to the shops,” said BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Sarah Jesser. Breast screens (screening mammograms) are available for eligible people aged 40 and older, with individuals welcome to continue screening beyond age 74. Women aged between 50 and 74 are actively encouraged to screen every two years, as the benefits of screening mammography have been shown to be most effective for this group. Currently only one in every two women aged 50 to 74 participate in the free BreastScreen Queensland program within their recommended time frame. Having mobile clinics can help make it easier for people to attend screening closer to where they live or work. “One in seven women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Regular breast screening helps save lives by finding breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat,” Ms Jesser said.
