2 Gullivers celebrating 50 Years teaching the Gold Coast to swim Next year it will be fifty years since Gullivers began teaching the Gold Coast to swim. Gullivers started operating in 1975 in a back yard facility in Southport and moved to Upper Coomera in 1998. The current centre has since grown to be the biggest standalone swim school on the Gold Coast, providing more than 50,000 lessons a year and more than two million since 1975. Gullivers has resisted the industry trend to branch into multiple centres rather focusing on the one facility personally run by Terry Gulliver ensuring only the highest quality of instruction and results others envy. Over the years Gullivers pupils have achieved a series of remarkable achievements often featured on National TV and prominently in the print media. Television audiences marvelled at three years olds riding tricycles around the bottom of the pool. They were even more astounded to see three year olds conquering the Olympic distance swimming 1500 metres. One two year old amazed everyone when she swam 800 metres and a couple of one year olds swam 100 metres. At Gullivers we are proud of the fact we really teach kids to swim not just be comfortable in the water. Our warm shallow indoor pools and team of highly skilled and passionate teachers ensure the perfect environment for quick learning. If you are considering swim lessons for your youngster or already having lessons but you feel they should be doing better be assured there is no one better than Gullivers. Don’t take our word for it. Come and see for yourself. Gullivers Coomera is just a few minutes from anywhere on the Gold Coast. I guarantee you it will be worth the drive. Book a no obligation free trial lesson - Phone 5561 7733. See advert Page 3 Since 2003 Gullivers has also operated one of the biggest and most exciting OSHC programmes in Queensland with the Federal government using the Gullivers programme to launch the now Australia wide Active After School Care programme in 2005. The programme includes free swim lessons, gymnastics and cooking classes. No wonder people say OSHC is better at Gullivers Coomera. SUPER OSHC PROGRAMMES AT GULLIVER’S SINCE 2003 Friends Botanical Art Group 2024 Perceptions of Nature Exhibition The popular ‘Perceptions of Nature’ botanical art exhibition will be held again in 2024, at the Robina Community Art Gallery (adjacent to the Library), from November 27 to December 8. Friends President Mary Woods will officially open the exhibition at 4pm on Thursday November 28. All are welcome. Exhibiting artists include Sandra De Leacy, Anneke Schuck and Cathryn Coutts, who will be joined again by members of the Friends Botanical Art Group. Their artwork will include paintings, drawings, porcelain and jewellery, inspired by the plants and animals found in the Botanic Gardens. Sandra De Leacy has been making a range of hand painted porcelain forms with designs, colours and textures inspired by the flora and fauna in the gardens. Her delightful paintings of birds on porcelain tiles will be of great interest to exhibition visitors. Anneke Schuck enjoys experimenting in a variety of art forms. Painting on porcelain for many years, she has recently added a dimension to her porcelain jewellery by weaving wire around a medallion as well as fusing glass to porcelain. Exhibition visitors last year appreciated watching her making the jewellery and discussing the techniques directly with the artist. Cathryn Coutts has been focusing on significant trees in the Gardens, specifically Eucalyptus trees found growing on the Gold Coast. Following up on her Eucalyptus drawing and identification workshops held earlier this year for Native Plants Queensland, these paintings show a detailed rendering of the bark, flowers and fruit to help viewers identify different species, all of which can be seen in the Botanic Gardens, 230 Ashmore Road, Benowa. PAINTINGS - DRAWINGS PORCELAIN - JEWELLERY inspired by the plants & animals found in the Botanic Gardens Entry is free 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm Saturday & Sunday. By Friends of GCRBG

7 It’s time: Get Ready for upcoming storm season Coasters make an emergency plan. To start making an emergency plan visit getready.qld.gov.au/plan. The Get Ready campaign was developed thanks to support from the Queensland Government’s Get Ready Queensland program. The City’s free opt-in messaging service allows residents to get alerts to their phone during potentially dangerous situations. Sign up by visiting dashboard.goldcoast. qld.gov.au. Learn more about making a plan and packing an emergency kit by visiting cityofgoldcoast.com.au/getready. Gold Coasters are being urged to take the time to Get Ready for storm season by preparing a detailed plan to help ensure they stay safe during a disaster. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the Christmas and New Year’s severe weather showed just how unpredictable Gold Coast weather can be and how essential it is to prepare. “The storms, heavy rain and heat wave all within a few weeks provided some unprecedented challenges, including lengthy periods without power. We know some are still very much recovering from this event even today,” Mayor Tate said. “We are asking people to build on lessons experienced from those storms and take steps to get ready now including having a plan for lengthy power outages or loss of mobile phone service. “With the storm and fire season upon us we urge Gold Coasters to take the time to ensure they are ready for a natural disaster by having emergency kits and detailed emergency plans. “Prepare your home and property by making sure your gutters and yard are clear of leaves, branches, and debris. This helps prevent flooding and water damage during heavy storms.” The peak severe weather season on the Gold Coast is between October and April each year and can include bushfires, storms, heavy rains, high winds, and heatwaves. To help prepare in case of a disaster, Gold Coasters should: • Prepare an emergency plan • Prepare an emergency kit • Understand what risk your home and area may face • Prepare your property by clearing leaves, branches and debris from your gutters and yard When preparing an emergency plan residents should consider situations like what if you can’t get home, what if your children are at school or childcare, do you have somewhere to evacuate to, and what happens if you lose power for any length of time. The new online severe weather emergency planning tool launched by Get Ready Queensland will help Gold

If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. Paris Miki Helensvale accepts all health funds, so book your appointment and make the most of your benefits. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 23 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Maximise Your Health Cover Don’t kiss your optical benefits goodbye! Don’t forget to use your Optical Benefit before 31st December

All Ages - Entry is free. 135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise www.hota.com.au Tick cases on the rise in South East QLD Animal Welfare League Queensland calls on pet owners to be vigilant this tick season. Tick season has started in South East Queensland and Animal Welfare League Queensland’s (AWLQ) Community Vet Clinics (CVCs) have been seeing a rise in tick-related cases in recent weeks. Since August, AWLQ’s CVCs have already treated 26 tickrelated cases in both cats and dogs (including Border Collie pup, Skylah, pictured right) with this year’s mild winter and recent warmer weather likely boosting local tick populations. Paralysis ticks are parasites that attach themselves to animals in order to drain their blood. As they do this, they secrete a toxin that affects animals’ nervous systems, leading to sickness or death. Pet owners are urged to take preventive steps against paralysis ticks, including ensuring their pet’s tick medication is consistently up to date every 30 days and thoroughly examining pets daily. Remember to check between their toes, inside their ears, nose, mouth and their belly. “Prevention is a lot better and cheaper than cure. Ensuring your dog or cat is consistently up-to-date with their tick prevention medication is paramount,” said Dr Dia Charalambous, AWLQ Vet Director. “Keep an eye out for any symptoms. If you notice symptoms or you do find a tick on your pet, the best thing to do is take them into your local vet clinic. If you do remove a tick from your pet yourself, ensure you take the remainder of the tick with you to your vet so they can identify it.” When the tick first attaches to the animal, it won’t have any signs of paralysis. If you can find the tick early before enough toxins have been injected into their system, it can help prevent any symptoms of paralysis. Common signs and symptoms that your pet may be suffering from paralysis tick toxins include: • Vomiting or dry retching • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Excessive salivating • Coughing or loud panting • Wobbly gait • Weakness in the hind limbs, progressing to total paralysis Ticks often live in bushland or scrubby areas. Avoiding tick habitats can also reduce risk. Ensure you consult your vet about the most suitable treatment for your pet.
