Supported by the City of Gold Coast’s Catchment and Citizen Science Grants Program, TurtleWatch GC empowers local communities to help conserve marine turtles through citizen science initiatives. Running from November 2024 to March 2025, this season’s efforts focus on the critical nesting and hatching period along the coast, and TurtleWatch GC is calling on volunteers to join the initiative and make a meaningful impact on marine turtle conservation. TurtleWatch GC, spearheaded by Watergum in partnership with Sea World Foundation, has become integral to local turtle conservation, collecting Turtle nesting season kickstarts TurtleWatch Gold Coast program essential data to support research and management strategies. This season, the program will enhance its focus on the nesting and hatching activities of loggerhead and green turtles, both of which are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and human impacts. Caitlin Mandrusiak, TurtleWatch GC Coordinator at Watergum, emphasized the value of community involvement: “Our volunteers are the backbone of this project. Their contributions enable us to gather accurate data shared with conservation authorities to better understand turtle populations and implement protective measures.” The Sea World Foundation, a long-term advocate for marine conservation, continues to support TurtleWatch GC, helping the program reach a broader audience, involve more volunteers, and expand conservation efforts. Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Coordinator Siobhan Houlihan noted, “We’re proud to be part of an initiative that not only protects these species but also inspires the community to engage in marine conservation.” The TurtleWatch GC program invites community members to monitor turtle nesting sites along local beaches. Volunteers receive training to identify nesting signs, report data, and help protect nests from predators and environmental hazards. Whether joining TurtleWalk patrols or serving as a Turtle Nest Guardian, participants play an active role in safeguarding vulnerable turtle populations.
