Friends President Mary Woods will officially open the exhibition at 4pm on Thursday November 28. All are welcome. Exhibiting artists include Sandra De Leacy, Anneke Schuck and Cathryn Coutts, who will be joined again by members of the Friends Botanical Art Group. Their artwork will include paintings, drawings, porcelain and jewellery, inspired by the plants and animals found in the Botanic Gardens. Sandra De Leacy has been making a range of hand painted porcelain forms with designs, colours and textures inspired by the flora and fauna in the gardens. Her delightful paintings of birds on porcelain tiles will be of great interest to exhibition visitors. Anneke Schuck enjoys experimenting in a variety of art forms. Painting on porcelain for many years, she has recently added a dimension to her porcelain jewellery by weaving wire around a medallion as well as fusing glass to porcelain. Exhibition visitors last year appreciated watching her making the jewellery and discussing the techniques directly with the artist. Cathryn Coutts has been focusing on significant trees in the Gardens, specifically Eucalyptus trees found growing on the Gold Coast. Following up on her Eucalyptus drawing and identification workshops held earlier this year for Native Plants Queensland, these paintings show a detailed rendering of the bark, flowers and fruit to help viewers identify different species, all of which can be seen in the Botanic Gardens, 230 Ashmore Road, Benowa. Venice’s most desirable bachelorette, Lucia Trevisan, has just had the best kiss of her life. If only she knew with whom. After losing her parents in a tragic accident, and having her then eleven-year-old face splashed across every newspaper in Italy, Lucia will forever be known as l’Orfana. Years later, Lucia is a perpetual hot mess, hiding away from the outside world, running her parents’ Italian language school. When the school’s future is threatened, Lucia must come out of hiding and fight back - despite the many distractions, like a masquerade ball and an electrifying anonymous encounter. Between dates to uncover her mysterious kissing Casanova, the quest to save her beloved school, dodging paparazzi, and dealing with her infuriating - yet infuriatingly handsome - new neighbour, will Venice’s most famous singleton sink or swim? Six tips to sell your home this summer Summer is a great time to sell a Gold Coast home. The weather is great and the tourists are in town looking for a dream home or a great investment. Your local expert agent, Joe Farr from Farr Real Estate, has a few great tips to maximise your sale price this summer. 1 – Pick the right inspection times. It’s important to get the times right as people get busy during the ‘silly season’. Avoid times when people are more likely to be doing their Christmas shopping or attending parties. It’s also usually better to have morning inspections before it gets too hot, or evening inspections to show off views and entertaining areas. If your home is on the water, try to work around the high tides. 2 – Look after the garden Make sure to keep the lawns green and the gardens tidy. If you’re landscaping before selling, make sure to choose plants that are most suitable for the summer heat and humidity. And be sure to keep the leaves under control with a quick sweep before inspections. 3 – Focus on the outdoor space Highlight the entertaining areas of your home, particularly outdoors. Furnish the outdoor areas nicely, pressure clean the paving, keep the pool sparkling, and maybe even fire up the BBQ for an open home. 4 – Take advantage of natural light If it’s not too hot, open the windows to get some fresh air through the home, and open the blinds and curtains. Natural light will make your rooms feel more spacious, as well as show off views. If natural light isn’t an option, ensure all of your lights are working and install nice bright globes. 5 – Stay cool In our hot, humid summers, there’s nothing better than walking into a cool, air conditioned home. Make sure your air conditioners are serviced and working well, and turn them on a good 30 minutes before an inspection to get the home to a comfortable temperature. Set out some chilled water, juice or iced tea for the buyers to enjoy. 6 – And call Joe Farr! Before you go on the market, call your local expert agent to come and give you some personalised advice. Joe has been selling on the northern Gold Coast for over 20 years and knows what buyers like to see when they’re purchasing in our spectacular area. You also need to make sure to pick an agent who has exceptional negotiation skills and a team of marketing experts to find the best buyers. Record breaking prices don’t happen by accident, even in this booming market. Skill and strategy is required, and Joe’s team have a structured system to get you the best possible result. 5 Use it or Lose It! 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX $150 OFF COMPLETE PAIR PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au Book your appointment today! If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. Paris Miki Helensvale accepts all health funds, so book your appointment and make the most of your benefits. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 23 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Maximise Your Health Cover Don’t kiss your optical benefits goodbye! Don’t forget to use your Optical Benefit before 31st December

OPEN 24/7 Tick cases on the rise in South East QLD Animal Welfare League Queensland calls on pet owners to be vigilant this tick season. Tick season has started in South East Queensland and Animal Welfare League Queensland’s (AWLQ) Community Vet Clinics (CVCs) have been seeing a rise in tick-related cases in recent weeks. Since August, AWLQ’s CVCs have already treated 26 tickrelated cases in both cats and dogs (including Border Collie pup, Skylah, pictured right) with this year’s mild winter and recent warmer weather likely boosting local tick populations. Paralysis ticks are parasites that attach themselves to animals in order to drain their blood. As they do this, they secrete a toxin that affects animals’ nervous systems, leading to sickness or death. Pet owners are urged to take preventive steps against paralysis ticks, including ensuring their pet’s tick medication is consistently up to date every 30 days and thoroughly examining pets daily. Remember to check between their toes, inside their ears, nose, mouth and their belly. “Prevention is a lot better and cheaper than cure. Ensuring your dog or cat is consistently up-to-date with their tick prevention medication is paramount,” said Dr Dia Charalambous, AWLQ Vet Director. “Keep an eye out for any symptoms. If you notice symptoms or you do find a tick on your pet, the best thing to do is take them into your local vet clinic. If you do remove a tick from your pet yourself, ensure you take the remainder of the tick with you to your vet so they can identify it.” When the tick first attaches to the animal, it won’t have any signs of paralysis. If you can find the tick early before enough toxins have been injected into their system, it can help prevent any symptoms of paralysis. Common signs and symptoms that your pet may be suffering from paralysis tick toxins include: • Vomiting or dry retching • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Excessive salivating • Coughing or loud panting • Wobbly gait • Weakness in the hind limbs, progressing to total paralysis Ticks often live in bushland or scrubby areas. Avoiding tick habitats can also reduce risk. Ensure you consult your vet about the most suitable treatment for your pet. In addition to grieving, you may face the responsibility of navigating complex legal and administrative tasks. At Aylward Game Solicitors, we understand the stress and challenges that arise and are here to guide you every step of the way. When someone passes away, families must notify various organisations and manage the estate. The Australian Death Notification Service allows you to inform multiple government agencies at once. However, other steps remain such as notifying banks, cancelling driver’s licences, shares, managing property, vehicles and even filing tax returns for the deceased and their estate. In Queensland, you may need a Grant of Probate if your loved one had significant assets. This process verifies the Will and authorises the Executor to manage the estate. Without probate, institutions like banks and share registries won’t release the assets. Our experienced team can ease this burden. We handle every aspect of the probate application, notifying institutions and managing asset distribution. Supported by the City of Gold Coast’s Catchment and Citizen Science Grants Program, TurtleWatch GC empowers local communities to help conserve marine turtles through citizen science initiatives. Running from November 2024 to March 2025, this season’s efforts focus on the critical nesting and hatching period along the coast, and TurtleWatch GC is calling on volunteers to join the initiative and make a meaningful impact on marine turtle conservation. TurtleWatch GC, spearheaded by Watergum in partnership with Sea World Foundation, has become integral to local turtle conservation, collecting Turtle nesting season kickstarts TurtleWatch Gold Coast program essential data to support research and management strategies. This season, the program will enhance its focus on the nesting and hatching activities of loggerhead and green turtles, both of which are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and human impacts. Caitlin Mandrusiak, TurtleWatch GC Coordinator at Watergum, emphasized the value of community involvement: “Our volunteers are the backbone of this project. Their contributions enable us to gather accurate data shared with conservation authorities to better understand turtle populations and implement protective measures.” The Sea World Foundation, a long-term advocate for marine conservation, continues to support TurtleWatch GC, helping the program reach a broader audience, involve more volunteers, and expand conservation efforts. Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Coordinator Siobhan Houlihan noted, “We’re proud to be part of an initiative that not only protects these species but also inspires the community to engage in marine conservation.” The TurtleWatch GC program invites community members to monitor turtle nesting sites along local beaches. Volunteers receive training to identify nesting signs, report data, and help protect nests from predators and environmental hazards. Whether joining TurtleWalk patrols or serving as a Turtle Nest Guardian, participants play an active role in safeguarding vulnerable turtle populations.
