Taking good care of yourself during the winter months involves keeping your immune system at peak efficiency and acting quickly at the first sign of a cold. There are also natural remedies and common-sense strategies you can try should you come down with the sniffles. Keep your fluids up It’s common to feel thirsty on hot summer days, but it’s important to monitor your hydration and keep your fluids up during the cooler months, too. Drinking water regularly during the day can help you stay well all winter. Water is critical for our bodies, and drinking plenty of water will help remove toxins, which benefits your immunity. Water enables nutrients to get into your system and helps you concentrate when you need to. Dehydration can also contribute to a low mood or feeling flat, so get a tall glass of water into you right now! When you are feeling unwell, there are also a few fluids it is best to avoid. If you are feeling blocked up and congested steer clear of dairy, because milk can thicken mucus. It’s also best to avoid both coffee and alcohol and to stick to water until you feel better. Notorious and delicious At the first sign of a cold, see if you can get your hands on a bowl of hearty veggie soup to give you a vitamin and mineral top up. Carrots and celery contain Vitamins A and C while onions and garlic have a compound called allicin that has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Throw in some chicken, if you have it, for some additional protein to help you fight that infection. Potent mushrooms for health and wellbeing Another helpful winter food is mushrooms. One study has found that shiitake mushrooms improved T-cell count and reduced inflammation. These fungi are one of the few edible sources of Vitamin D, a mineral which we normally get from the sun. Shorter daylight hours during the autumn and winter months can mean reduced supply of Vitamin D, which can result lowered immunity. Foods to avoid You are probably aware of foods that have high histamine counts, which can cause allergies for some people, like fish, shellfish and nuts. Even if you don’t have any allergies, it pays to avoid these high-histamine foods while you have a cold. Squid, mussels and clams can all cause an increase in congestion. Tofu and soy sauce, both made from soya beans, also have high histamine counts. The same goes for tomatoes and avocados. It’s also best to avoid sweets, cakes and ice cream, even if you have a sore throat. Honey is a much better idea, packed with antibacterial and cough-suppressing properties. If you’re really craving something sweet, opt for berries or grapes for extra nutritional value. Don’t forget about fibre Feeling sluggish is common during the cooler months. You may feel more inclined to eat heavier, heartier meals and this can cause your digestive system to slow down or struggle. Keeping your fibre intake up during winter will enable you to process additional heavier foods you may be eating. This winter, keep up your intake of grains, beans and leafy greens. High fibre foods will also help you feel fuller during the day and keep things moving comfortably along. Ginger and ginseng Ginger has some genuine germ-busting powers. Adding some fresh ginger to your tea can soothe a sore throat, and it contains elements that have anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger is used in traditional Chinese medicine because of its warming properties, which can help reduce fever by inducing perspiration. Ginseng is a different plant, which is also rich in vitamins and minerals. Although they have similar names, these two are quite different and are native to different parts of the world. Echinacea and turmeric Another two herbal remedies you might like to try are echinacea and turmeric, both of which have traditionally been used to treat colds and flus over the centuries. Echinacea is a member of the daisy family, and is available as a supplement or as a tea. Turmeric, a popular spice frequently found in curries, is known for its antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Turmeric can be enjoyed in many ways including in teas, with baked veggies or in pasta sauce. Other essentials oils Essential oils can be used in diffusers, baths or in some cases applied directly. There are several oils that can help with colds and flus. Indigenous people of the Americas would use cypress oil from the cones of the cypress tree to relieve cold and flu symptoms. Cypress inhalations are also said to improve respiratory illnesses. Eucalyptus oil is used in Vicks Vapour Rub and can help a blocked or stuffy nose. Stay home and rest Your mother was right- it is thought that exposure to cold conditions can impact out immune response, so don’t go out if you have a cold! Stay home and rest. Taking a break as soon as you start to feel unwell can reduce the overall length of infections. Winter health and natural remedies

Botanically the genus is Actinidia. The first species described and attributed was Actinidia callosa by English botanist John Lindley in 1836 from a species collected in Nepal in 1821. Altogether there are fifty-five accepted species, growing across a wide area of Asia including Japan, Korea, and west to Nepal. Gardening by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant grown by commercial growers in cooler temperate climates with some recent cultivars bred to suit warmer regions. The first seeds were brought into New Zealand by teacher Mary Isabel Fraser in 1904 on her return from visiting her missionary sister in China. They were planted in an orchard at the Bay of Plenty and bore fruit commercially and were exported to London by 1910. New Zealand is now one of the largest producers behind China. Originally called Chinese Gooseberry, the Kiwi name was registered commercially in New Zealand in 1959 (but not adopted until 1970) for the fur-like hair on the mature fruit that was considered to resemble the Kiwi bird's tight plumage. Kiwi flowers are dioecious meaning the plants bear only male or female flowers, often beginning as white and fading creamy yellow as pictured. In the wild, the attractive flowers Kiwi fruit species Actinidia chinensis and Actinidia deliciosa are vigorous climbing plants native to southern and central China where it forms dense thickets in forests. A. chinensis has yellowish flesh, and A. deliciosa has pale green fruit, both reported to be excellent for gut health and digestion. Seeds were distributed to the USA and Europe in the late 19th C. The massive individual climbing plant pictured was planted in Paris in 1905. Varieties and numerous cultivars have since been bred and are pollinated by birds and bumble bees. Honeybees generally prefer other plants, and growers often intervene by closely placing multiple hives leading to competition in nectar collection and pollen transfer. One male plant will produce enough pollen for up to eight female plants. (Spoiler – in some areas, they are jumping the fence and becoming potential weeds after birds drop the seeds.) Not for the standard residential fence or pergola, the climbing branches can twine along its support for around 8 metres. Kiwi fruit produces large deep green roundish leaves, pale on the underside with a notch on the end. Commercial orchards grow cultivated forms, the largest Australian producers are in the Shepperton region of Victoria. This network of blood vessels and capillaries extends into deeper tissues and the dermis, nourishing the skin. When this system is disrupted, conditions like rosacea can develop, leading to persistent redness and irritation. Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes the blood vessels to widen (vasodilation), increasing blood flow to the skin and making superficial capillaries fragile. This results in skin that is dry, dehydrated, sensitive, irritated, and red. The four stages of rosacea include: Facial redness and flushing - Often in the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose, typically in a butterfly pattern. Facial bumps and breakouts - Pustules and other blemishes may appear. Enlargement of the nose - Known as rhinophyma, where the nose becomes bulbous. Watery and irritated eyes - Eyes may become red and feel gritty. Managing rosacea involves understanding and avoiding common triggers. According to a survey by the National Rosacea Society, the top triggers are sun exposure (81%), emotional stress (79%), hot weather (75%), wind (57%), alcohol (52%), spicy foods (45%), indoor heating (41%), and certain skin care products (41%). Being aware of these can help minimize flare-ups. Rosacea can be hereditary and is often chronic, with ongoing flare-ups. Your GP or dermatologist are best able to determine the treatment you require. Lifestyle and nutrition management are key to controlling long-term redness. Avoid histamine-rich foods such as red wine, beer, distilled spirits, certain aged cheeses, smoked meats, and fish. Reducing sugar-rich foods, spicy foods, hot drinks, and excessive dairy consumption can also help reduce external inflammation. At-home skincare routines can provide significant relief. Use an SLS-free, pH-balanced cleanser, a prebiotic serum, a hyaluronic acid serum, a lightweight, irritant-free moisturizer, and mineral makeup. Clinic treatments are available, including hydration products and calming masks, LED Healite (low-level light therapy) for calming effects, BBL (Broadband light therapy) for reducing redness, and laser treatments to target deeper vascular issues. However, a tree is not acceptable if it is messy. August is Family History Month so now might be a good time to consider the state of your data. If you have been researching for many years you may have begun gathering your information differently. Have you got paper records and if so are they filed in a way that can be followed by anyone who may pick up where you left off? A note in the front of your file explaining your logic could be helpful. Perhaps you were lucky enough to begin your research at a time when data became available online. This means finding “stuff” can be easy but if you don’t reference where you came by this information you may never find it again. Saving to an online tree is fine but consider also saving these documents to your computer hard drive and backing that up regularly so you always have the evidence for your facts. Finally, if you are new to researching make a plan at the start as to how you are going to save your documents and what your filing system will look like – it is very difficult and time-consuming to go back later and re-organise. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. For further information visit http:// www.goldcoastfhs.org.au or attend our rooms at Bicentennial Building, 833 Nerang-Southport Road, Nerang. GOLD COAST FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY HAS TWO EVENTS HAPPENING IN OUR ROOMS TO COINCIDE WITH FAMILY HISTORY MONTH. Our OPEN DAY will be held on Sat 20th August 10am – 2pm. 14 Graffiti removal program cleans up the Gold Coast Mayor and artist Zowie Baumgart The City’s Artbox program has expanded to a further 23 locations across the Gold Coast to help wipe out graffiti. Artbox is an initiative that was introduced by the City to reduce graffiti on traffic signal boxes in high visibility areas while beautifying neighbourhoods and supporting local artists. Mayor Tom Tate said City expenditure on graffiti removal for 2023-24 was approximately $700,000, with City officers removing close to 7000 incidents. “Graffiti has a negative impact on the community, decreasing actual and perceived safety in our neighbourhoods, as well as costing the City a substantial amount of money,” said Mayor Tom Tate. “The unique artwork that we see on our traffic signal boxes helps prevent graffiti in highly visible areas by taking away a blank canvas for vandals and in turn reducing the need for removal costs. This is a hugely popular incentive for local artists and gives them a platform to show their creativity while contributing to a clean and safe community.” There are now over 190 artworks installed on traffic signal boxes which were often a target for vandals given their visible locations at major intersections. The City invested $23,000 into this phase of Artbox, costing approximately $1000 per traffic signal box. Next year, the Artbox initiative will include the Helensvale pedestrian underpass thanks to a $350,000 public arts grant through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. The City will go out to tender later this year to appoint an artist for the Helensvale pedestrian underpass safety project, which also includes the installation of other safety strategies in the space. Artbox is a program used in collaboration with other City-led initiatives to reduce and remove graffiti from public assets and structures. Graffiti can be reported via the City App, City website, or the Graffiti Hotline on 07 5667 5974. Free graffiti removal kits are available for residents and businesses to remove small amounts of graffiti from their property. Artbox is delivered as part of the City’s 2027 Community Safety Program, helping create spaces that are safe, clean, and free from graffiti. 17 Common Denture Problems A common problem among denture wearers is ill-fitting dentures, which cause pain. Pain is directly related to the way dentures fit. When a denture rests snuggly against the gums and doesn’t slide around, then pain shouldn’t be an issue. But when dentures begin to rub against the gums, it leads to soreness and swelling. Left untreated, this can make wearing dentures intolerable. If dentures don’t fit well and you experience pain, you are likely to eat less or eat softer foods. Not eating foods that you used to enjoy is another sign of unstable or uncomfortable dentures. Poor diet and lower nutritional intake could lead to a variety of health and digestive problems. Furthermore, ill-fitting dentures constantly rub on the gums and can create a callus, called an Epulis, which may require oral surgery to remove. Natural changes in the gums and jaw over time can be another factor that causes denture pain. Gums change, and over time bone underneath the gum can shrink. The change is progressive, so you may not notice it, and over time your dentures no longer fit properly. Fixing Denture Discomfort No matter what the cause, a dental health professional can fix ill fitting dentures. Three techniques are typically used: a simple denture adjustment can sometimes fix the problem however. Relining the denture will seat the denture closely to the shape of the gums therefore stabilizing the denture giving more comfort. Depending on the individual you should have your dentures relined every two to three years to compensate for the constant change in your jaw bone. Depending on the way you use your denture, for instance you could have a very hard bite or you could be grinding your teeth in your sleep or similar, your denture should last you from five to eight years. If your denture is worse for wear then a new denture is the solution. Remember wearing the same denture past its due by date is doing you no favours, it will certainly cause problems to your gums and your jawbone later on making it more difficult to get a proper fitting denture as you age. ‘http://www.agingcare. com/Articles/denture-care-for-falseteeth-148020.htm’ Don’t put up with pain and discomfort from your dentures • Implant Dentures • Health Funds & Veterans Affairs • Precision Dentures • Mouthguards/Splints • Same Day Repairs & Relines Shop 40/1 Mudgeeraba Rd, Worongary Town Centre 5/26-28 Commerce Drive, Robina TWO LOCATIONS Worongary & Robina NEED NEW DENTURES?
