MUSIC Review The Robertson Brothers 1960s Variety Show 23rd June | Twin Towns My Mum always said, “there’s a time and place for everything”. A pretty generic 1960’s restraining-order-type statement to cover all sorts of “impending calamities” if I was to do or speak inappropriately. Thus, no doubt saving my family from acute embarrassment. Of course, the standard answer to “Well when?” was always… “Not now”. A lot of exuberant behaviour was flattened off. Probably was a good thing at the time, while I waited to become older, sensible and mature. Well that never eventuated, did it? The sensible and mature bit at least. One of the solid reasons we keep returning to the Robertson Brothers’ performances in our State is the freedom to enjoy and reminisce as a collective audience. Think of it as a comparison to Christmas family gatherings - but on any given day of the year. What have you got up to since last year? You’ve done what? Get out! - really? We covered two coastal performances in a row at either end of the southeast Queensland sector. No two 60’s shows are exactly the same, as neither of the two venues will have the same environment and patrons. Yet both shows are highly polished to still allow for artistic freedom and delivery while holding down their rigorous TV schedule on RBTV. Caloundra Events Centre and Twin Towns’ attendees had many second-timers and their first-timer friends. I loved eavesdropping on them “selling the show” before it started, then watching their heads sway in time to the great songs of the ‘60’s era, coupled with cheeky comments from real-life brothers, whose Aussie irreverence must make their poor Mum cringe. I must ask Stu, Geoff or Ben. Or Simon Brook McLachlan, whose amazing vocals complement the repertoire. I know that Dieter Kleemann, their awesome guitarist, just shakes his head quietly. The Robertson Brothers 1960’s Variety TV Shows are intellectually, aurally and visually stimulating. These Robbo ratbags also continued to taunt my emotions: Me laughing one minute, and then strangely finding stuff (probably dust for sure) in my eyes that I had to dab them when songs with soaring harmonies and gripping words finished. The show that takes the audience on a spellbinding journey through the many eras of the legendary Elvis Presley. The show begins with Louis Brown who captures the audience with his raw rockabilly sound and signature dance moves. Michael Chambliss takes the role of Elvis in his movie years and the ‘68 Comeback Special as he effortlessly recreates the straight-out-of-the-army look and into the black leather, personifying this period with all the songs and sex appeal that was Elvis. Steve Michaels is also arguably the greatest exponent of Elvis ‘Aloha from Hawaii’-era in the world, the look, the sound, and the moves, combined with the shy and charming Elvis’s disposition will make ‘Elvis and American Trilogy’ THE Elvis show to see in 2024.
