23 When the final fragmentation (of sorts) of the Beatles happened in 1970, the music world was left with little more than memories. Inspired by both their experimental sonic direction and the development of electronics and recording advances in the music industry, Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Roy Wood formed the Electric Light Orchestra. Some have said that it took up where the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” left off. ELO was a small dig at the “terribly, terribly, posh” light orchestral BBC radio program from the 1940’s to the 60’s. Lynne wanted to take back the assumed “exclusiveness” of acoustic orchestral instruments from the perceived societal jewellery-rattling elite and blend it into the mix - the emerging wild, free-wheeling electric sounds hinted at by the Beatles. A new recipe for sound was now on the menu. Not lost on Paul McCartney when he first met up with Jeff Lynne. Paul didn’t mince words when he said: “I know where you got that riff from for ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ ”. He thought Lynne had lifted it from “A Day in the Life”. Subsequently they became great mates. Later another Beatle - George Harrison - partnered up with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison along with Tom Petty to form The Traveling Wilburys. It takes dedication and talent to honour the vibe of the Electric Light Orchestra. When Brisbane’ Tivoli Theatre in October hosted Rockaria: The ELO Experience it was going to be a tough call. Jeff Carter, whose hugely wide entertainment industry roles include being a vocalist (does some great “Johnny Cash” gigs by the way), a guitarist, a drummer - and a street-savvy promoter got the full house singing quickly. Not skimping on anything including having a seven-piece band, the fullness of the sound was both awesome and classy. All the great hits that sold ELO’s 50 million albums - including the absolute crowd favourite “Don’t Bring Me Down” (Bruce!) were sung. A knockout night, lights and audience energy at full power – fully electric! www.facebook.com/RockariaELO www.101fm.com.au Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography)
