One is programmed to reproduce the original with minor updates, the other is chock full of revamps, and vital new energy. The ongoing professional battle is keeping interest, outlook and income from a changing and ageing audience. Sometimes the success strategy is not always within human control – and more about of doing the best you have with what’s in front of you – attitude and talent. Killing Heidi is that group. THE group who pushed 2024 out of the way and came with us into 2025 at Twin Towns showroom. Quick backstory: Formed in ‘96 by sister and brother duo, Ella and Jesse Hooper as an acoustic folk outfit. Get this, Jesse was 15 and Ella was 13. ABC’s Triple J, then dedicated to working around the tightly controlled record company grip on releases, put the group on one of their Unearthed albums. Debut single “Weir” reached #6 on the ARIA charts, amazingly went Platinum. On Ella’s 17th birthday in 2000, their second single “Mascara” stayed at #1 for 3 weeks – it went Platinum as well! In 2003, Killing Heidi recorded their 3rd album in LA. By 2006, any thought of re-union was unlikely. Ella went on to solo work as well as radio and TV gigs. However, the successful Australian-wide Red Hot Summer Tour, around 2020, saw Killing Heidi become a major performers. NYE 2024? They magnetised the audience at Twin Towns to the front stage. I watched from the side curtain as the vivacious energy rolled off Ella Hooper and guitarist Gillan Gregory, backed by hard hitting Adam Pedretti on drums, Phoebe Neilsen on bass, Clio Renner on background vocals and keyboards. Clearly entertaining at least 2-3 generations of fans into a new year and a new era.
