BACK TO THE TIVOLI Twin Towns | Dec 10th MUSIC Review Do you remember when Variety Shows were one of the prime entertainment genres on television? They became a welcome relief from the 59-minute glacial-speed soap operas with organ background music, the 27-minute detective stories which were conveniently solved in 26 minutes - and the 15-minute black & white boring documentaries on Chilean Alpacas or the “Value of Algebra in Domestic Cooking”. So began an invitation for us to dine out on a buffet of local talent in our own lounge room. Occasionally, it branched off to become cruel talent shows where the focus was on the judges’ wicked ability to make people squirm - but mostly it was a wonderful exposé of entertainment skills. Variety Show roots are in “Vaudeville”, popular in the States in the early 20th century. A kind of theatrical slapstick comedy, song & dance, magic sleight-of-hand - and any other weirdo activity all thrown together on stage in quick succession, that might draw applause. Inside the Twin Towns palatial room, the Tivoli show tradition continues. This morning it was very much a full house. Clearly the word had got out. Everyone benefits from a good Variety show, but especially the Artists, who get the opportunity to share their craft with such a large crowd – not normally available to them in such a prestigious venue which is constantly booked up to a year ahead. Todays’ listing included some supersurprising acts. A piano accordion player (give me strength) and a hula-hooper. (are you serious?) My automatic bias kicked in, prejudging them as amateurish. Yet here we are, proved badly wrong again! Nick Bavarelli, an Award-winning instrumentalist had the entire audience in fits of joy and laughter as we joined in on tunes he was playing on the accordion. Mel Wheeler literally dazzled the crowd with LEDlit hula-hoops. She was tripping her own light-fantastic show as they (multiples) swung around her! Individually separated with the Tivoli Dancers slots were outstanding singers. Each with their own set of numbers. Sharon Rowntree, Jenifer Green, Steven Fisher-King and Alexis Lee. This is what a great Live show is all about! “I tips me hat to you all!” www.twintowns.com.au www.101fm.com.au Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography)
