9 The world is facing unprecedented challenges from disasters, which is increasingly happening with household items that we might not even be aware of. Moreover, they can overlap, producing compounded and cascading effects. While these events alone and together can be devastating, the good news is that we can take steps to ease their impact and prepare for their aftermath. This is where the art of disaster preparedness comes into play. What makes a disaster? A disaster is defined as a natural, man-made and technological hazards as well as various factors that influence the exposure and vulnerability of a community. At Studio Village Community Centre, we understand vulnerabilities to their greatest extent and feel prompted to assisting the community to encourage a strong sense of independence. 87 Village Way, Oxenford | (07) 5529 8253 www.studiovillage.com.au facebook.com/studiovillage VILLAGE COMMUNITY SERVICES INC. One example that stood out to us, was a senior man who strategically put out his own household fire with only a small fire extinguisher and utilising his knowledge of fire spreading. Without his readiness and clever thinking, this man could have lost everything. It is hard to imagine an event such as this could happen to one of us, but unfortunately, it is a very real possibility. At Studio Village Community Centre, we understand the devastating and everlasting effects of fires. As we head into our most fire susceptible time of the year, we would like to do our part in helping local homes in preparation for these destructive events. This REKINDLING LIVES: How Communities can Prepare for Fire has encouraged us to provide fire extinguishers to locals who need it. If you would be interested in receiving one of these extinguishers feel free to give us a call.
