23 MUSIC Review Theres three words which easily prove Australia’s country music genre has come of age. From simple chord structures (basic C, F & G) and even simpler lyrics involving girlfriends leaving, a favourite dog “crossing the rainbow bridge” - or some worshipful song dedication to an aging 18-wheeler following an endless white line, Aussie C&W music has had its fair share of critics. To be honest, some of the mocking was unfairly harsh - admittedly a small percentage was deserved. Yet oddly, they never picked on other music genres the way they did to Country. Look, I have a soft spot for classy country music, having played bass in a late 70’s working Country Gospel Bluegrass band. I discovered what the difference was. Those diamonds in the dirt, you might say. The three-and-a-half-minute storytelling journeys using musical notes as the vehicle. It might well be the tune that hooks you, or a voice so uniquely intriguing – but it’s those words that keep you hanging in for the rest of an awesome story like you were sitting around a campfire swapping mysterious yarns. Those three words that proved the country music genre has come of age? It’s Troy Cassar-Daley. Troy is on a National Tour and stopped by the Twin Towns showroom, Tweed Heads recently. A full house greeted the fantastic support act, the Bo’Ness Brothers (real brothers, too) with enthusiasm normally retained for the main act. The boys later joined Troy for a couple of songs in his show. A most respectful entertainer, an ambassador for Australian Country music for 30 Troy Cassar-Daley Between the Fires Concert Twin Towns Friday 31st May years, Troy’s got 13 studio albums, 2 live albums and 5 compilation albums under his big - buckled belt. Inspiration for songwriting is a funny thing. If you wake up in the middle of the night with a great idea, you have to act on it. Troy’s latest album (his 14th) “Between the Fires” was recorded in his late Mum’s home. It has sounds and ambiance that no studio could ever reproduce. As a result, Troys’ story-telling songlines left the Twin Towns audience captivated. www.troycassardaley.com.au www.twintowns.com.au Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson www.101fm.com.au Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography) Pick up some Good Vibrations at this unforgettable celebration dedicated to the music of The Beach Boys For nearly 60 years, the Beach Boys have embodied summertime.
