Finding Ancestors through Electoral Rolls In both Australia and New Zealand electoral rolls are an excellent way to trace ancestors and in particular their movements around the country. This information could also cover their spouses and adult children given that the address is recorded – all those living at the one address are probably related. In New Zealand electoral rolls were compiled roughly every three years giving frequent checks on where your family were living. The information in these rolls can also confirm you are looking at the correct person. Rolls are available on Ancestry, Find My Past and Family Search although differing years are on each site. You can find the years 1853 to 2010 using various sites – quite a large range in which to follow your ancestors. In Australia, you can also find the electoral rolls dating from 1893 on the above sites as well as My Heritage or through the Australian Electoral Commission. Western Australia still maintain their own rolls. As you can see the record set is not as widespread in terms of time but is still a very valuable resource. Both State and Commonwealth rolls are available giving us a comprehensive set of documents to trace our ancestors. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. A New Season, A New Challenge As the seasons change, so does the way our skin behaves. With cooler temperatures and lower humidity, winter presents several challenges for maintaining healthy and vibrant skin. Cold weather and reduced humidity can cause the skin to become thinner and lose moisture, increasing the risk of dehydration. Dryness exacerbates the loss of elasticity and accelerates the aging process. Additionally, blood vessels retreat deeper into the skin to conserve body heat, resulting in a paler complexion. Those with sensitive skin are particularly prone to dryness, itching, redness, and irritation during this time. Although summer has passed, UV light remains a concern year-round. While UVB rays are less intense in winter, UVA rays - known for causing aging and skin cancers - remain as potent as they are in summer. Consider using zinc oxide-based sun protection, which is effective in protecting and calming skin throughout the year. Opt for high-quality mineral makeup for added daytime protection and shield yourself from temperature extremes and cold winds whenever possible. Maintaining hydration is crucial during winter months; aim for approximately eight glasses of fluids daily. Consider switching to a richer moisturizer containing hydrators like hyaluronic acid and non-clogging oils such as squalene, shea butter, macadamia, and sea buckthorn oil. Adding a serum to your daily skincare routine can promote a healthier, more supple appearance. Serums are lightweight and packed with concentrated ingredients that penetrate deeply into the skin. Nightly hydration masks can further alleviate dehydrated skin. In colder months, natural cell turnover slows down, necessitating gentle exfoliation. Use AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHA (beta hydroxy acids) for effective chemical exfoliation, but if your skin is sensitive, opt for acid-free exfoliants like enzymes. Body skin can also become flaky and dry, so incorporate a mitt or loofah into your shower routine. While hot showers may be tempting, they can strip the skin of necessary oils. Limit shower time, as prolonged exposure can leave the skin feeling tight and dry.
