Ironically, it was rescued from past decades film industry ridicule - to high reputation in the matter of a few short months. Classic pop operettas, rock musicals, with embedded memorable tunes and dramatic story-songs transferred onto double vinyl records and cassettes. From Cast recordings of stage plays at locations like London’s West End and New York’s Broadway came the emergence of “the Musical – Version two”. It was boosted into cinematic masterpieces and even charted on Billboard. Music had grown up from jingly “Moon/June/Croon” compositions to deep, complex and meaningful structures. What a time to be alive! So cool to have the double LP - you could read lyrics and sing along to. This particular Sunday afternoon, Joey Fimmano's “Music of the Night- A Celebration of Musicals” was at Logan Entertainment Centre with the talented Michaela Hodgson and Dexter Villahermosa. This is by far Joey’s most brilliant conceptual production to date. It brought to us more than distant memories. Cleverly, and I mean that, we were presented on a silver platter, a “best of” - a sampling you might say, of many wonderful Musicals. Ones such as “Cats”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Les Misérables”, “Saigon” and many more. Audience reactions were startling and surprising. Completely spontaneous standing ovations and whistling occurred during the performances, not just at the finale. Patrons came over to the photographer and I to confess that originally, they weren’t “into” this sort of music. However, they became overwhelmed with its soaring melodies and captured by the culture it showcased. Some folk even had moist eyes – it may have been the air conditioning. Yes, yes of course it was… Much credit needs to be attributed to the “Music of the Night” band members. Such a huge live backing from three talented people: Michael Rohanek, keyboard player and Musical Director, Peter Blowes on Bass, and timekeeper Bill Kezelos on drums. The afternoon went far too quick, a sure sign of Happiness. Mission accomplished Joey, Michaela and Dexter.
