Overdentures are a type of implant-supported denture that offers several benefits, particularly for those who may have had traditional dentures but are looking for more stability and comfort. Overdentures are supported by dental implants, which provide a stable base for the denture. This eliminates the need for messy adhesives and ensures that the denture stays in place during chewing and speaking. Enhanced Comfort Traditional dentures may irritate the gums or cause discomfort. Overdentures, being implant-supported, distribute pressure more evenly, reducing discomfort and gum irritation. Better Chewing Function With Overdentures, the ability to chew and eat a variety of foods improves because they are firmly anchored to the implants. This can restore a more natural bite and provide more confidence when eating. Increased Confidence With improved retention and comfort, people wearing overdentures often feel more confident. They don’t have to worry about their dentures slipping or falling out, making them feel more secure in social settings. No Need for Soft Liners or Adhesives Overdentures don’t require soft liners or adhesives, which are often messy or uncomfortable with traditional dentures. The snug fit provided by the implants keeps them secure. Improved Speech Since overdentures stay securely in place, they can improve speech clarity and comfort. Traditional dentures may cause slurring or difficulty speaking, especially if they slip out of place. Long-Term Solution The overdenture system offers a durable solution. Implants themselves are designed to last for many years, making them a long-term option for denture wearers. Experience the Next Generation of Dentures with Locator Technology! A testimonial from a happy customer . . . “I just wanted to say thank you for the food I received—it was absolutely delicious! The handmade Swedish meatballs were incredible and paired perfectly with the mashed potatoes and peas. I’m usually a picky eater and never liked peas, but now I think I just hadn’t had them cooked the right way before! Everything was so tasty I scraped the plate clean. One in five older Australians reports feeling lonely. Feeling lonely can affect a person’s physical and mental health, leading to an increased risk of dementia, high blood pressure, and dementia. At Home Care Assistance, we see the effect that loneliness can have on a person’s quality of life. We have put together this blog about how home care can help your loved one avoid feelings of loneliness Social isolation is common among older adults. Retirement and losing friends significantly change a person’s life as they age, leading to a much smaller social circle. Not only are they less active and less likely to engage in social activities, but they are also more likely to live alone after a husband/wife/partner passes away. With more time on their hands but less company to spend it with, it is not surprising that our older loved ones may feel lonely. Other changes that can make it more difficult for loved ones to be socially active include a deterioration in hearing, which makes conversations difficult; decline in vision, which makes it riskier to leave the house; and an increased rate of illness and injuries, which tend to keep people at home. According to research, social isolation can have a range of adverse effects on people, including increasing their risk of: • Dementia by 50% • Heart Disease y 29% • Stroke by 32% Signs of loneliness can include: • Saying they are lonely • Emotional changes such as being depressed or expressing feelings of hopelessness • Behavioural changes such as being irresponsible with money • Not caring about their appearance • Saying they are not sleeping well • Withdrawing from activities If you start noticing these changes in your loved one, you can ask them how they feel and whether they are lonely. This might be a complex topic, but it is essential. If your loved one is experiencing loneliness, you can encourage them to go out more and join community groups to meet people. If, however, getting out and about safely is difficult, home care provided by a specialist provider such as Home Care Assistance can be a perfect option. Engaging in home care not only means that there is help available for your loved one for tasks they may find more challenging, such as shopping, cooking and cleaning, but also gives them company. It provides someone to talk to, have a cup of tea with them, and check in on them regularly. With the assistance of a Care Professional, your loved one may even be able to get out of the house to do more activities. Home care is flexible and can be adapted as your loved one’s needs change. Initially, they may just come in for the company and help with one or two tasks. However, if your loved one’s needs increase, the care can be easily scaled up to support them. This means that home care not only keeps your loved one company but can also provide peace of mind that there is someone supporting them and keeping them company. Support at home from a specialist provider, such as Home Care Assistance, can bring enormous benefits and comfort to your quality of life while living independently. Home Care Assistance has viable solutions for independent living. For more information, contact Home Care Assistance today. There are so many ways to collaborate that can make your work not only easier but also more pleasant. Joining others who may have different ways of researching that you have not thought of could open many doors whilst building your tree. A gold mine for finding like-minded researchers is your local Genealogy club or association, or you could try online forums and social media groups like Facebook or Reddit. Another way to connect, this time perhaps with someone DNA-related, is to check your Ancestry account and contact users who are researching the same tree as you. Once you have found other researcher(s) make sure they have the same goals and are prepared to commit to similar efforts in terms of time as yourself. It is also best to compare your recordkeeping style - the partnership may not work if you have different styles of research and data retention. Most importantly be clear on what you are both trying to achieve and what your end goals are. By finding someone – or even a few people – who have a mutual interest in your tree you can make your journey not only more accurate but also a more enjoyable exercise. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. 8 It has been another year of storms and cyclones damaging botanic gardens along the East Coast, inland and overseas. Hunter, Lismore and Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens were all affected. Historic Botanic Gardens in Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland received damage from Storm Eowyn on January 24th. Many wonderful private and public gardens have been equally affected. Alfred devastates beloved Botanic Gardens which took the full brunt of the wind. Fortunately, there was minimal damage in the Australian Defence Force Memorial Grove planted to honour Australian fatalities from the Afghanistan conflict, as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Avenue and Woodland Walk and Rosser Garden. After the loss of trees up to 160 years old in the four of Scotland’s Botanic Gardens in the massive Storm Eowyn on January 24, Simon Milne, Regius Keeper of Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh commented “Every tree has a history, a botanical value, and a conservation value”. Gold Coast Curator Paul Cockbain shared Milne’s sentiment “Every one of the trees we lost was significant”. All botanic gardens including ours on the Gold Coast are on a lifelong journey. They are a place to learn the mysteries of nature, sometimes a place to acknowledge the past, and always a place to forge the future. Images compliments of P.Cockbain FOOTNOTE : There will be a poster display and information about the damage and recovery at the Friends’ Centre. At the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens, Staff, Friends of the Botanic Gardens, the community, and visitors to the Botanic Gardens will be saddened and shocked at the loss of over 150 trees as well as structural damage and the loss of branches. Some of the Plant Collections have been set back 20 years and recovery work will stretch into the coming months and years. Trees planted on the first Community Planting Day in 2003 were lost. Some were rare or threatened species, including smaller plant species crushed by falling trees or flooded for many days. Others were planted as a commemoration, such as the Benowa Tree planted by the late Gene Rosser, then Friends’ Patron, with children from Benowa State School. There are also damaged trees in the Callitris Grove planted in 2015 by visiting Turkish Artists to commemorate the centenary of the Anzac Gallipoli Landing. Sadly the Story of Our Country and Fruits of the Forest Plant Collections which both celebrate plants known as edible or useful by our First Nation Australians sustained major losses. There has been extensive damage to the Gum Tree Corridor Tree Planted on Community Planting Day in 2003 Rosser Garden Damage 0417 294 778 A Touch of Grass Garden Care GARDEN CLEANUPS / REJUVENATION & MAKEOVERS A SPECIALTY We offer an experienced, professional and reliable service Call Jeremy on ... Beyond merely prescribing lenses, they play a pivotal role in aiding individuals in selecting glasses that not only correct vision but also complement their lifestyle, preferences, and unique facial features. One of the primary responsibilities of an optometrist is to conduct comprehensive eye examinations to determine the precise prescription needed for optimal vision correction. This involves assessing various factors such as refractive errors, astigmatism, and potential eye diseases. Armed with this information, the optometrist can recommend the most appropriate lens type, whether it be single vision for near or distance vision, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses for individuals with presbyopia. Choosing the right frames is equally crucial, blending functionality with style to enhance not only sight but also personal aesthetics. Optometrists are adept at guiding patients through the myriad of frame options available, considering factors like face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle preferences. Frames come in diverse styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, minimalist to bold, catering to individual tastes and preferences. Optometrists can recommend specialised lenses to meet specific visual needs. For individuals frequently exposed to digital screens, blue light filtering lenses can mitigate eye strain and discomfort. Those engaged in outdoor activities may benefit from photochromic lenses that adapt to varying light conditions, providing optimal vision in any environment. They can advise on lens coatings to enhance performance and durability. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and reflections, particularly beneficial for night driving or computer use. Scratchresistant coatings prolong the lifespan of lenses, ensuring long-term clarity and visual comfort. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 24 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. 11 Denture Problems Dentures can be an important solution to tooth loss. Today's dentures, also called false teeth, are not like the ones your grandmother wore. They are more comfortable and natural looking than they were in the past. Still, if you don't take proper care of your dentures, problems can occur. Common Denture Problems If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. You should also only wear dentures that fit properly. Otherwise, the following problems may occur: Gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, dentures that move around in your mouth causing mouth infections. Treating Denture Problems If you have problems with your dentures, see your dental professional right away. Your dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. Here are some ways to treat various denture problems: Make sure your dentures fit. Over time, your gums and bones will change and your dentures won't fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, modified, or replaced by your dental professional. Never try to adjust your dentures yourself. Speak slowly. When you first get dentures, it may be hard for you to say certain words. Be patient. Practice saying the challenging words aloud and speak slowly. Eat soft foods. If you are having trouble eating, follow these tips: • Take small bites of soft foods, such as eggs and yogurt, try to avoid sticky foods, chew your food slowly. When you chew, use both sides of your mouth at the same time this prevents your dentures from moving forward or tipping. Eating will become easier as you get used to your dentures. In time, you should be able to eat most foods. • Use an adhesive. Denture adhesives help your dentures stay in place and make them feel more secure. But denture adhesives should not be used to fix old or poorly fitting dentures. When using an adhesive, follow the instructions carefully. Use only a small amount. "I welcome you into the family!” said the man. “To show you how much we care for you, I am making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory everyday and learn the operation.” The son-in-law interrupted. “I hate factories. I can’t stand the noise.” “I see,” replied the father-in-law. “Well, then you’ll work in the office and take charge of some of the operations.” “I hate office work,” said the son-in-law. “I can’t stand being stuck behind a desk.” “Wait a minute,” said the father-in-law. “I just made you half owner of a money-making industry, but you don’t like factories, and won’t work in an office. What am I going to do with you?” “Easy,” said the son-in-law. “Buy me out.”

Eating on your own needn't mean beans on toast or a bowl of ice cream for dessert... check out these easy recipes to make cooking for one delicious! ~ Cooking for One ~ Flattened chicken with tomatoes, olives & capers • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast • a little seasoned flour, for dusting • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 large ripe tomato, chopped • 2 tsp capers • handful olives • splash white wine (or water, if you prefer) • chopped chives or parsley Split the chicken breast almost in half and open it out like a book. Bash with a rolling pin to flatten, then lightly coat in the seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a pan, add the chicken and cook for 3-4 mins on each side until crisp, browned and cooked through. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Add the tomato, capers, olives and wine to the pan, season to taste, then bring to the boil. Bubble the sauce for 2-3 mins until the tomatoes are starting to break down, then spoon over the chicken and scatter with chopped herbs. Delicious with steamed potatoes. Toss together vege pasta Berry Cobbler • 2 tsp sugar • ¾ cup of fresh or frozen blueberries • 1 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut • 1½ tbsp almond meal or plain flour • 1 tsp unsweetened applesauce • pinch salt • splash vanilla extract • sweetener to taste Preheat oven to 200C. In a small skillet or frypan melt sugar over medium heat. When completely dissolved (about 1 min), add blueberries and cook, stirring frequently for about 3 to 4 mins or until berries are liquidy but still retain some of their shape. Remove from heat. Meanwhile, combine coconut, almond meal, applesauce, salt, vanilla extract and sweetener in a small bowl and mix well. Applesauce should coat other ingredients so they stick together but aren’t too moist. Place blueberry mixture in a small greased ramekin (about 200ml) and sprinkle coconut mixture in small bits over top. Bake for about 20 mins or until top is cooked, crisp and slightly browned. Let cool. • ½ cup spiral pasta • ½ small can four bean mix • ½ small can corn • ½ small tub fresh napoli sauce • shaved parmesan to serve • torn fresh basil leaves to serve • green salad to serve Cook pasta according to packet instructions. Drain and return to pan and add beans and corn. Heat sauce over medium heat. Add sauce to pasta and toss until well combined. Top with parmesan and basil, serve with green salad.
