2 Science continues to show that a healthy sense of humour really can be good for you. Anyone who grew up with Reader’s Digest, as a subscriber or a casual browser during visits to the doctor, will tell you: Laughter is the best medicine. That adage goes back a long way but recent research has discovered that there’s more than a grain of truth to it – and it’s particularly relevant as we get older. While the experts stress that we should maintain physical health through diet and exercise, our mental and emotional well-being is equally important. We can’t laugh away all our problems, but maintaining a sense of humour can help us navigate our lives in a joyous and healthy way. Put simply, it feels good to laugh. Scientists have known that since the 1970s, when they established a link between laughter and our ability to tolerate physical pain. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. These endorphins promote an overall sense of wellbeing and can temporarily relieve pain. Furthermore, laughter boosts the immune system by increasing the production of antibodies and activating immune cells, which helps fight off illness and disease. The authors of a 2023 study titled Laughter as Medicine looked at the relationship between the release of cortisol, which is known to help maintain blood pressure, immune function, and the body's anti-inflammatory processes. Other studies show that the physical exertion involved in laughing can give you some of the benefits of a light workout. However, you need to keep it up for 10 minutes to get the recommended “dose”. As we age, cognitive decline can become a concern. Engaging in activities that stimulate the brain is crucial for maintaining cognitive function. Once again, humour comes into play. It involves complex mental processes, including the ability to understand and appreciate jokes, wordplay, and comedic situations. This mental engagement can help keep the brain sharp and improve memory. Humour also enhances creativity and problemsolving skills. It encourages us to look at situations from different perspectives and think outside the box. Laughter provides us with a natural and enjoyable way to cope with life's difficulties. It allows us to momentarily step back from our problems and view them in a less threatening light. Humour is also a powerful social tool that strengthens relationships and fosters connections with others. For older adults, laughter can be an excellent way to bridge gaps and build new relationships, as well as to reinforce existing ones. Here are some ways to put laughter into your life: • Watch funny movies, TV shows, or stand-up comedy can provide a good dose of laughter. • Spend time with friends or family members who have a good sense of humour. Their laughter can be contagious and uplifting. • Engage with books, articles, or cartoons that tickle your funny bone. • Try to see the lighter side of life’s challenges. Look for humour in everyday situations and laugh at your own quirks and mishaps. Important: Laughter is not a cure-all. If you feel sad or depressed, seek professional help. If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. 7 It’s time: Get Ready for upcoming storm season Coasters make an emergency plan. To start making an emergency plan visit getready.qld.gov.au/plan. The Get Ready campaign was developed thanks to support from the Queensland Government’s Get Ready Queensland program. The City’s free opt-in messaging service allows residents to get alerts to their phone during potentially dangerous situations. Sign up by visiting dashboard.goldcoast. qld.gov.au. Learn more about making a plan and packing an emergency kit by visiting cityofgoldcoast.com.au/getready. Gold Coasters are being urged to take the time to Get Ready for storm season by preparing a detailed plan to help ensure they stay safe during a disaster. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the Christmas and New Year’s severe weather showed just how unpredictable Gold Coast weather can be and how essential it is to prepare. “The storms, heavy rain and heat wave all within a few weeks provided some unprecedented challenges, including lengthy periods without power. We know some are still very much recovering from this event even today,” Mayor Tate said. “We are asking people to build on lessons experienced from those storms and take steps to get ready now including having a plan for lengthy power outages or loss of mobile phone service. “With the storm and fire season upon us we urge Gold Coasters to take the time to ensure they are ready for a natural disaster by having emergency kits and detailed emergency plans. “Prepare your home and property by making sure your gutters and yard are clear of leaves, branches, and debris. This helps prevent flooding and water damage during heavy storms.” The peak severe weather season on the Gold Coast is between October and April each year and can include bushfires, storms, heavy rains, high winds, and heatwaves. To help prepare in case of a disaster, Gold Coasters should: • Prepare an emergency plan • Prepare an emergency kit • Understand what risk your home and area may face • Prepare your property by clearing leaves, branches and debris from your gutters and yard When preparing an emergency plan residents should consider situations like what if you can’t get home, what if your children are at school or childcare, do you have somewhere to evacuate to, and what happens if you lose power for any length of time. 8 Friends Botanical Art Group 2024 Perceptions of Nature Exhibition November 27 – December 8 The popular ‘Perceptions of Nature’ botanical art exhibition will be held again in 2024, at the Robina Community Art Gallery (adjacent to the Library), from November 27 to December 8. Friends President Mary Woods will officially open the exhibition at 4pm on Thursday November 28. All are welcome. Exhibiting artists include Sandra De Leacy, Anneke Schuck and Cathryn Coutts, who will be joined again by members of the Friends Botanical Art Group. Their artwork will include paintings, drawings, porcelain and jewellery, inspired by the plants and animals found in the Botanic Gardens. Sandra De Leacy has been making a range of hand painted porcelain forms with designs, colours and textures inspired by the flora and fauna in the gardens. Her delightful paintings of birds on porcelain tiles will be of great interest to exhibition visitors. Anneke Schuck enjoys experimenting in a variety of art forms. Painting on porcelain for many years, she has recently added a dimension to her porcelain jewellery by weaving wire around a medallion as well as fusing glass to porcelain. Exhibition visitors last year appreciated watching her making the jewellery and discussing the techniques directly with the artist. Cathryn Coutts has been focusing on significant trees in the Gardens, specifically Eucalyptus trees found growing on the Gold Coast. Following up on her Eucalyptus drawing and identification workshops held earlier this year for Native Plants Queensland, these paintings show a detailed rendering of the bark, flowers and fruit to help viewers identify different species, all of which can be seen in the Botanic Gardens. Entry is free Opening times are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Sunscreen is your first line of defence against the sun, offering protection from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and wrinkles, while UVB rays affect the outer layers, leading to sunburn and an increased risk of skin cancer. Mineral sunscreens, which use natural minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, physically block and reflect UV rays, making them perfect for sensitive skin. Always aim for broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and use a high SPF to ensure maximum protection. Beyond sunscreen, wearing protective clothing like longsleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses is essential. Seek shade, especially during peak UV hours between 10am and 4pm and avoid tanning beds. Regularly monitor your skin for any changes, such as new moles or spots, and consult a dermatologist if you notice anything suspicious. In conclusion, by prioritising sun safety, you not only protect your skin but also enhance your overall well-being. By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer and keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant. Stay sun safe and enjoy the great outdoors responsibly! See advert front cover Tracing 17th Century British Ancestors In the 17th century vital records, (births deaths and marriages) were not kept in any formal sense. Many historical events took place like The Gunpowder Plot, the Great Fire of London, the Civil War and the Mayflower set sail for the USA, but unless your ancestors were wealthy or “upper class” it is not assured that you will find any record of them. All is not lost however because in 1538 Henry VIII ordered all parishes to keep registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. While not all of these records survived – and some parishes ignored the edict - many are still available, some online. These are known as Early (or Old) Parish Registers or in some cases, Bishop’s Transcripts. So, to help locate some of those very early ancestors you could try https://archives. parliament.uk/research-guides/protestationreturns/ which is the closest you will find to a 17th century census. Other sites that could help are British History Online, British Newspapers 1600-1900, London Lives 16901800, and Old Bailey Online – a mixture of free and paid databases. 14 Following an anti-inflammatory diet will not cure arthritis, however for many people it is an effective way of controlling symptoms, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of developing other health problems. Recent studies have also found that a diet high in ultra-processed food (one of the things to avoid in an antiInflammatory diet) was associated with higher rates of disease and mortality. What is an anti-inflammatory diet? An anti-inflammatory diet involves eating nutrient-rich, whole foods that reduce inflammation in the body. It contains plenty of fibre, antioxidants, and omega-3s. This means a diet rich in vegetables, whole fruit, whole grains, legumes, and fatty fish – that is as unprocessed as possible. Include these anti-inflammatory foods: Fresh vegetables (all kinds) – Aim for a variety of types and colours (a rainbow of veggies provides phytonutrients) with a minimum of four to five servings per day – especially dark, leafy greens (spinach, kale, Asian greens) broccoli and cauliflower, brussel sprouts, beetroot Whole pieces of fruit (not juice that strips them of fibre) – three to four servings per day is a good amount for most people, especially berries and cherries Fatty fish – such as salmon, trout, sardines, mackerel and tuna Herbs and spices -turmeric, ginger, basil, oregano, thyme, cinnamon etc., Healthy fats – extra virgin olive oil is the best option, avocado oil and the fats found in seeds, nuts, fish Nuts/seeds – such as walnuts, cashews, almonds, pistachios, pine nuts, chia, hemp Whole grains – brown rice, amaranth, buckwheat, and quinoa Legumes/beans – especially black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, lentils, red kidney Drinks – water, green tea and organic coffee in moderation Nightshades or not? Eggplant, tomatoes, capsicum and potatoes – are central to Mediterranean cuisine. Some people believe they trigger arthritis flares, but there’s limited scientific evidence to support this theory. Some people may react as they have a food sensitivity to these vegetables. If you react consider replacing these vegetables with sweet potatoes, cauliflower or mushrooms. The Mediterranean Diet is considered one of the healthiest diets and is also a good go-to for an anti-inflammatory diet. It also includes dairy such as yoghurt and cheese, good for calcium intake to prevent osteoporosis. Avoid these inflammatory / processed foods Processed meats – sausages and cold cut meats – ham, salami etc. Refined sugars – found in soft drinks, cookies, cake, lollies, ice cream, some breakfast cereals Trans fats – found in deep fried foods, fast foods, commercially baked goods Processed snack foods – such as chips and crackers Gluten, white bread and pasta and too many carbohydrates Soybean oil and vegetable oil Alcohol in excessive quantities An update on ultra-processed food and poor health Firstly what is processed food? “Processed food” includes food that has been cooked, canned, frozen, packaged or changed in nutritional composition with fortifying, preserving or preparing in different ways. That is, packaged food that is no longer in its natural state. Recent studies have found that a diet of ultra-processed food was associated with higher rates of disease and poor health. We know that ultra-processed foods tend to be higher in added sugar, salt and fat making them unhealthy. However, even if they have added nutrients, the evidence suggests that because they’re ultra-processed it doesn’t matter what we add to their nutrient content, it’s not going to make them a healthy option. A recent study based in France, found increasing the proportion of ultraprocessed food in the diet by 10 per cent was associated with significantly higher rates of cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease (such as stroke). Another study based in Spain, found people who consumed more than four servings of ultra-processed food per day were 62 per cent more likely to die of any cause compared to those who had less than two servings per day. In both studies, large groups of adults completed food intake questionnaires, then their rates of disease were tracked for up to 10 years. We might need to reconsider what it is about these foods that makes them unhealthy, said Professor Lawrence, a food policy expert from Deakin University. “It’s not just about the so-called ‘risky’ nutrients in foods,” he said. “The nature of the cause is associated with the physical and chemical changes that happen to the food as a result of this high degree of industrial processing.” The findings provide further weight to the already sizeable pile of evidence that highly processed food is linked to poorer health. Anti-inflammatory diet – made easy
