But when it comes to securing the finance needed to make this a reality, the process can quickly become stressful. Why many traditional lenders aren’t meeting the needs of over 50s Traditional lenders often have rigid requirements and slow approval times, making it difficult for older homeowners to access funds when they need them. This can leave you waiting—and potentially missing out on your dream home. With strict criteria around age and income for most lending products, many over 50s are left with little choice but to sell their home, sometimes compromising on the sale price, just to secure their next property. On top of this, they can face the added hassle and costs of temporary accommodation, like renting or paying for storage, while they wait to make their next move. A faster and more flexible way to secure funds to downsize Bridging finance can help. Bridging loans are short-term finance designed to help you cover the gap between buying your new property and selling your current one. They let you access your existing property’s value as security on the loan, so you don’t have to wait for a sale. As well as being fast, this gives you the flexibility to sell when the timing is right and secure your dream home. Make downsizing easier with a local solution Funding is a nationally-recognised lending institution established by Gold Coast entrepreneur Jack O’Reilly. Since 2015, Funding has helped thousands of homeowners overcome their unique challenges. “I have seen firsthand how slow and rigid traditional lending can leave over-50s stuck. 4 Older people have special experience and talents to bring to the aged care system, whether as workers or volunteers. Ageing is a special stage of life and who better to understand it and provide support to those who are struggling with ageing than someone who also has lived experience? It is not surprising, then, that the Department of Health and Aged Care has embarked on a recruitment drive for mature aged volunteers to contribute to the nation’s aged care homes and support services. The department has released a booklet outlining how to volunteer, what volunteers should expect, and how care providers can best enable volunteers in the system. The department gets off on the right foot by saying, “Volunteers are an essential part of the aged care system. They can give support to older people from diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and cultures to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.” Volunteering is rewarding for volunteers, too, they can benefit from meeting people, learning skills, and positively contributing to the community. There are two types of volunteers: • Formal volunteers: they give their time freely by supporting older people in their own or residential aged care home for the common good and without financial gain. • Informal volunteers: who do things such as helping an elderly neighbour or caring for a family member or friend. What aged care volunteers do Volunteers can spend their time supporting older people in many ways. They can help with gardening, transport, and meal delivery or simply just be there for a chat. They can also give support to older people in: • Residential aged care homes • Respite care • The homes of people with a Home Care Package (HCP) under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). The time commitment varies between roles and aged care providers work with volunteers to find a role that best suits. Most volunteering is face-to-face, but some roles can be virtual (online). Support and training As a volunteer, you can expect to be trained by the aged care provider you choose. You should receive: • Appropriate volunteer insurance cover • Induction and training in line with your role Aged care needs older volunteers How about joining a service sector that really needs you and enables you to support other ageing people? • Respect for your involvement • The ability to provide feedback • A warm welcome and encouragement • On-site supervision and access to a volunteer manager. Pathway to a career in aged care Volunteering can open career doors. The sector is under pressure and looking for more staff, so if you want to change careers, or you are seeking part-time work, you may want to try volunteering first. You can learn more about careers in aged care, what formal qualifications are required, and available training programs - https://www.health.gov.au/topics/ aged-care-workforce. 6 If you have lost some or all of your natural teeth, you may be using dentures: complete dentures if you’re missing all of your natural teeth or partial dentures if you’re missing just one tooth or a few teeth. Both types need special care. Here are some guidelines for looking after your dentures. Handle them with care Chances are your dentures didn’t come cheap. And since they can break easily, you’ll want to be careful with them. Clean them over a folded towel or bowl of water in case they drop. Don’t use toothpicks when you’re wearing them, and don’t use strong cleaners or hard brushes to clean them. All of these can cause damage to your dentures. And never leave them where young children or pets can reach them. Clean them daily Just because these aren’t your real teeth doesn’t mean they don’t need regular cleaning. If your dentures are plagued with plaque, it can lead to problems in the tissues underneath, such as infection and irritation. Brush your dentures with a regular soft-bristled special denture cleaning brush to ensure a proper clean. Or a soft bristle toothbrush so it is not too abrasive. Regular hand soap, non-abrasive toothpaste and denture paste are all good choices for cleaning dentures. • NOBLE DENTURE DESIGN Denture Care Look after your whole mouth Even if you have complete dentures, you still need to care for your gums. Whenever you take out your dentures, give your mouth a good rinse and then massage your gums with a soft toothbrush. If you have partial dentures, you still need to properly brush and floss your natural teeth every day. Watch for changes in fit If your dentures aren’t fitting properly or have become ill fitting that’s another reason to check in with your Dental Prosthetist. The bones in our mouth shrink and change over time, which can lead to an improper denture fit. Poorly fitting dentures can cause problems like sores, pain and burning. They can even cause abdominal gas from swallowing air. Your Dental Prosthetist can adjust your dentures or reline them if necessary. Dentures that don’t fit can also be a sign of periodontal disease, so it’s important to get checked. See your Denture Professional on a regular basis Making a regular appointment to see your Dental Prosthetist is the single most important aspect of caring for your dentures. If you haven’t seen your Dental Prosthetist lately why not book an appointment today with NOBLE DENTURE DESIGN on 5525 2899. 8 Nourishing Nutrition: Gourmet Meals healthy eating over 55 At Gourmet Meals, we are dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of older adults through meticulously crafted meals that meet their evolving nutritional needs. Nutrition over 55 isn't just about weight management— it's essential for maintaining vitality, enhancing immune function, and enjoying an active lifestyle. As metabolic rates slow with age, the need for nutrientdense foods becomes crucial. Malnutrition in seniors is a serious issue that often goes unnoticed or overlooked. As we age, our bodies experience various changes that can affect our ability to obtain and absorb vital nutrients. Unfortunately, malnutrition can have severe consequences for seniors, including weakened immune systems, increased risk of infections, muscle weakness, and even cognitive decline. At Gourmet Meals, we recognise the importance of addressing this issue and providing nutritious meals specifically designed for seniors. There are several factors that contribute to malnutrition in seniors. One of the main reasons is a decrease in appetite. As we age, our sense of taste and smell may diminish, reducing interest in food. Additionally, certain medications can affect appetite and digestion, making it more challenging for seniors to consume an adequate amount of nutrients. Dental problems, difficulty chewing or swallowing, and limited mobility can also contribute to malnutrition in our aging population. At Gourmet Meals, we understand the unique nutritional needs of seniors and the importance of providing them with balanced and nourishing meals. Our expert chefs and nutritionists collaborate to create menus catering to seniors' dietary needs. We focus on using fresh, whole ingredients packed with essential nutrients, ensuring that every meal is not only delicious but also highly nutritious and snap-frozen to maintain its nutritional value. Conversations overcome loneliness. Dementia is not always age related. Many people as young as twenty have it. Some footballers like Wally Lewis have CTE, a form of dementia caused by head knocks. Remember Mohamed Ali, he had Parkinsons which generally develops into a brain-altering dementia. Dementia is not one-thing, like the common cold. There are hundreds of sub-types, yet each type will gradually stop the proper functioning of certain brain cells, affecting memory, thinking and speech. We do not yet fully understand the causes of dementia, but we are well aware of its affects. So, in the event of an early positive diagnosis, we can prepare ourselves and our affairs before any potential decline. It is experienced differently for each individual. By changing to a healthier diet and regular exercise, we can delay the worsening effects. Some people with dementia feel ashamed or are in denial of having dementia, while others are more willing to discuss it. When you recognise dementia for the disability that it is, your approach is likely to be more compassionate. If someone volunteers the information that they have dementia, ask them “what kind of dementia do you have?” and “how are you managing with it?”. Get the conversation rolling. Combat their loneliness with kindness. If you or someone you know is living with dementia, we invite you to participate in our new gentle exercise class designed for people with dementia and their caregivers. The class is part of the Active & Healthy program and will be held for free every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Nerang Bicentennial Centre, starting on October 9th, 2024. For more information, or to discuss how you can get involved, please contact Garry on 0412 007 689. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia. 9 We offer free breast screens for women aged 40 and over. Breast screening is most effective for women aged 50 to 74. Our appointments are quick and can be made outside working hours. Book today. One in 7 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Regular breast screening helps save lives by finding breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. A breast screen looks for very small breast cancers that can’t be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast screens (screening mammograms) for eligible people 40 years and older, with individuals welcome to continue screening beyond age 74. Women aged between 50 and 74 are actively encouraged to screen every two years, as the benefits of screening mammography have been shown to be most effective for this group. While early detection can increase treatment options, only one in every two local women aged 50 to 74 participates in the free breast screening program within recommended time frames. Of more than 34,500 people who screened at the BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service last financial year, 1-in-10 stated they speak a language other than English at home. To help make it easier for people to learn more about breast screening and why it’s important, particularly for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, BreastScreen Queensland has recently released a suite of new translated information resources. People can visit the BreastScreen Queensland website, or scan the QR code, to access breast screening information in a range of languages. ‘A short guide to breast screening’ Fact sheet is now available in 13 languages - Arabic, Japanese, Kinyarwanda, Korean, Nepali, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog-Filipino, Thai, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese – and can be found online at breastscreen.qld. gov.au/client-support/women-frommulticultural-communities A Fact sheet for women living with disability is available in English, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese via breastscreen. qld.gov.au/client-support/women-withdisability New resources help women learn more about free breast screening Two animated videos that help explain what happens at a breast screening appointment and Assessment clinic (for those who are asked to return for further tests), are accessible in numerous languages including Auslan. Permanent clinics are conveniently located at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale, Robina and Southport. A visiting mobile unit provides screening in additional locations throughout the year to help make it easier for people to attend closer to where they live or work. 12 The Eyes Have It The eyes are the focal point of the face, but they are also among the first areas to show signs of aging. The skin around the eyes is approximately 10 times thinner than other facial areas, making it more susceptible to environmental damage, lifestyle factors, and ageing. As we age, the skin loses collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which are vital for maintaining firmness, elasticity, and hydration. The skin around the eyes also has fewer oil glands, leading to dryness that makes fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Why Wrinkles and Fine Lines Form Genetics influence how skin ages, but lifestyle factors like sun exposure accelerate fine lines and wrinkles. UV rays break down collagen, leading to premature aging. Treatments that stimulate collagen production and increase hydration can slow the aging process. In-clinic options include: • Skin needling • Fractional laser • Radiofrequency • Chemical peels • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy At home, eye creams with hydrating ingredients and peptides can support the skin, and anti-wrinkle injections can temporarily relax muscles that cause crow’s feet. Dark Circles: Causes and Solutions Dark circles can be hereditary or develop due to age, illness, or lack of sleep. Thinning skin and blood pooling can cause discolouration, while bone reabsorption can create hollowing. Treatments such as vitamin A and peptide-based eye creams, radiofrequency skin tightening, laser therapy, or PRP can improve the appearance of dark circles. Puffiness and Eye Bags Puffiness often results from poor lymphatic circulation, causing fluid accumulation. A gentle lymphatic eye massage or caffeine-based eye creams can help. Cold tea bags applied to the eyes can also reduce puffiness. Eye bags, caused by weakening of the supportive ligament under the eyes, may require lower lid surgery for more effective treatment. Tips for Maintaining Eye Health and Appearance • Protect your eyes with sunglasses to prevent UV damage. • Reduce salt intake to avoid fluid retention. • Boost your vitamin C to improve skin health. • Limit sugar, which damages collagen. • Stay hydrated and prioritise sleep. • Eat foods rich in essential fatty acids for glowing skin. Finding the Right Solutions for You Eye care products and treatments can vary greatly, and the eye area is particularly sensitive. At-home skin needling can be beneficial, but it’s important to consult a dermal clinician to determine the best product, treatment, or procedure for your specific concerns. The obvious example is www.ancestry. com and whilst this is an excellent resource other sites should be utilised in your search. I have family that hail from Oxfordshire so I investigated what other sources I could delve into. Many British counties hold their own records – a simple Google search will highlight where the records are kept for the county you are researching. For Oxfordshire, I found www.oxfordshirehistory.org. uk which provided many links to information about the shire. I checked these links to establish exactly what records and dates were available and where I could go to view these either online or in person. Most counties hold records and many of them have family history societies with databases. There may be a fee to join these societies but it will be much less than an in-person visit! In other cases, the local authority may have made access available via one of the common large sites like www.myheritage. com. Try a Google search for vital records for your village, town, burgh, shire or county to open a wealth of information regarding where else to look for your ancestors. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. For further information visit http:// www.goldcoastfhs.org.au or attend our rooms at Bicentennial Building, 833 Nerang-Southport Road, Nerang. Glasses are like an extension of our body, and a perfect fit can make a world of difference. Here’s a guide to help you choose the most comfortable eyeglasses. Determine the Type of Eyeglasses You Need The first step is ensuring your eyeglasses improve your vision. Start with an accurate, up-to-date prescription. Then, think about the type of lenses that suit your lifestyle and visual needs. Some options include: • Single-vision lenses: For nearsightedness or farsightedness. • Multifocals: For those who need multiple focal points. • Reading glasses: For presbyopia. • Prism lenses: To correct disorders like double vision. • Plano lenses: For changing your look without prescription correction. • Prescription sunglasses: Offering both UV protection and vision correction. Consider lens coatings and add-ons like anti-glare or blue light filters, especially if you spend time in front of digital screens. These can enhance comfort and protect your eyes. Match Your Eyeglasses to Your Face Shape Next, consider your face shape. Selecting frames that suit your face helps distribute the weight evenly, avoiding pressure points on your nose, temples, or cheekbones. The goal is to find glasses that feel like a natural part of your face—lightweight and barely noticeable. Know Your Measurements Accurate measurements are key to a comfortable fit. Important dimensions include frame width, lens width, temple length, and bridge width. The bridge, the horizontal distance between the lenses, plays a significant role in weight distribution on your nose. Here are a few tips: • The bridge should not feel tight on your nose. • A slight gap between the glasses and your nose is acceptable. • If the bridge is too wide, your glasses will slide down. • If too narrow, they will create pressure on your sinuses. Consider Your Lifestyle and Personality Your lifestyle also influences the comfort of your eyeglasses. If you have an active lifestyle—whether in sports or outdoor activities—look for durable, flexible materials like polycarbonate. These are impact-resistant and lighter than traditional plastics, reducing strain on your nose and ears. For those who spend hours in front of screens, lenses with blue light filters can reduce eye strain. On the other hand, if style is your priority, lightweight materials such as acetate can offer both fashion and comfort. Choosing comfortable eyeglasses requires careful consideration of your vision needs, face shape, measurements, and lifestyle. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 23 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. The 100m boardwalk – which links the Oceanway between Tallebudgera Creek Park and Tallebudgera Beach – has been widened from 2m to 4m and had new support piers, seating, landscaping, tree planting, and extra lighting installed. As a part of the project about 150m of the Oceanway was widened to 4m to help ensure the safety of all users. “The Tallebudgera boardwalk and Oceanway is used by thousands of residents and visitors and these improvements ensures everyone can safely enjoy Tallebudgera Creek Park and the Oceanway,” Division 13 Councillor Josh Martin said. “The refurbishments also saw the installation of a rock wall which will help reduce erosion and protect this cherished natural area. The new viewing platform also allows residents and visitors to enjoy the scenic outlook across the creek. We are committed to maintaining our parks, protecting the Gold Coast environment, and helping the community experience and connect with nature.” The improvements replace the former boardwalk which had deteriorated to due to the marine environment and required replacement. The newly refurbished boardwalk will require less maintenance, ensuring it remains in use for decades to come. More than 30 native trees were replanted along the boardwalk as well as 11 new trees which replaced imported species. The opening of the boardwalk marks the completion of a series of significant investments made by the City in this area which have delivered improvements to Tallebudgera Creek Park including new public amenities, a ‘Changing Places’ facility for reduced mobility access, upgraded barbecue and picnic areas and improved landscaping. The boardwalk upgrades were funded through a grant from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and additional funding from the City of Gold Coast. The refurbishments are a part of the City’s Our Natural City Strategy commitment to improving the community’s experience and connection to nature.

Specialising Garden Makeovers & Rejuvenation * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping Gardening by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant Lavender is a much loved but often frustrating plant to grow in our humid climate. The genus name is derived from the Latin word ‘lavare’ for bathing or washing. The natural range of 41 Lavendula species accepted by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew is in dry, warm areas of the Iberian Peninsula and Mediterranean Coast and North Africa, to the Middle East, and as far east as India. This beautiful species has a long and interesting history because of its unique combination of volatile oils which are present in both leaves and flowers. Its reputation for healing, as a fragrance and an insecticide began with the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Middle Eastern peoples and remains important for its essential oils. Up to 100 phytochemicals (chemical compounds produced by plants) play an important role in the plants’ protection against insects, animals, fungi, and bacterial diseases. While some of these are known to cause allergic reactions in some people, lavender is used extensively in lotions and balms, particularly natural products, as well as perfumes and cosmetics. Lavender oil was added to sphagnum moss as a salve for wounds during the First World War. The phytochemicals in some Mediterranean lavenders are as volatile as the oils in Australian Eucalypt trees and are equally combustible. The soft texture of the silvery lavender leaves is a result of indumenta, minute surface hairs that insulate the plant from extreme heat. The flowers are arranged in a spike, and depending on species or cultivar may vary from purple through violet to blue, as well as pink or white. It is useful if planted near vegetable beds and fruit trees to attract a wide range of pollinators that include butterflies and moths, bees, wasps, and hoverflies. Its charm as a garden plant has been maintained over the centuries. Species and cultivar forms of lavender are readily available in garden centres and plant nurseries. Of the many species of lavender, one of the toughest to survive the Gold Coast climate and soils is French Lavender Lavendula dentata. Recognisable for its toothed leaf edges this species origins are Mediterranean Basin countries where soils are shallow, well-drained, and based on limestone alkaline substrates. It is suggested that applying lime or dolomite to the soil a few weeks before planting is useful as most Gold Coast soils are slightly acid. Lavender also grows well in pots, especially terracotta which allows air to enter through its porous surface. Regrettably, some exotic plants find Australian soils and climate too perfect and can spread easily by windborne seed as is the case Lavendula stoechas. It has become a Significant Environmental weed in South Australia and an Environmental weed in Victoria and parts of NSW and Western Australia. Perhaps this species should be on the watch list in Queensland.
