Have you thought of the different places we might look for their records, particularly those who lived “on the fringes” of society? Asylums became home for folks who had disabilities that today would not see them locked away - someone who had attempted suicide may be in an asylum because this was an illegal practice. From 1871 householders were required to report any disabilities on the census. Findmypast has many asylum records. Workhouses existed between 1834 and 1955 and there are records on Findmypast and Ancestry. Set up for those who fell on hard times and could not house or clothe themselves you may find a relative listed here as a prostitute because she had an illegitimate child. Lawbreakers would find themselves contained in many records including court, prison and newspapers. One place to look is https://www. oldbaileyonline.org/ which contains records for 1674-1913. The research guides are excellent on https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. Two great sites for hospital records are https:// hharp.org/ which holds records for four children's hospitals 1852-1921 and https:// wellcomelibrary.org/moh/ which has London records 1884-1972. Finally, many sites explain the bastardy legislation as it changed over the years in the UK – a Google search will lead you to these. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society.
