What is a Repair Café? Repair Cafes are pop-up events where volunteer fixers, menders and repairers provide a free repair service to the community to extend the life of our products, keep waste out of landfill and shift away from the over consumptive and throw away mindset. The community are invited to bring in a household item needing repair and together, the repair volunteer and item owner work together to repair the item, exchanging skills and knowledge on repair, as well as expanding community social connections and having a friendly chat and coffee. Items repaired may include clothing and textiles, fashion jewellery, low voltage tech and battery electronics, leather goods, bags, picture frames, sharpening, small upholstery and timber items, children’s toys, hand and garden tools and many other household item that can be carried in. Founder of the Gold Coast Repair Café, David Paynter explains, “There are over 3500 Repair Cafes around the globe with an expanding interest in the repair movement happening locally on the Gold Coast. Repair keeps items out of landfill, it saves on carbon emissions by not having to replace the item with a new one, as well as saving people money during a challenging cost of living period.” The first Repair Café Gold Coast was held on the 15th August 2020 in Currumbin, with past events held around the GC including Miami, Burleigh, Arundel and Springbrook, partnering with Rotaract and Rotary Clubs, as well as the Springbrook Mountain Community Association and Springbrook Men’s Shed. Like all similar community based groups be they a Community Garden, Men’s Shed or similar, they also provide the opportunity to connect with those in your community, share culture and friendship, learn new skills or share your existing knowledge with others. They also help reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness by providing a space to bring people together, connect with others in their community either by volunteering, or by visiting and participating, with all the mental health benefits this provides. This event is supported by Councillor Dan Doran, Division 11, CoGC. The Wonder And Happiness Of Being Old: Offerings Of Hope, Joy, And New Ways To Perceive Aging by Sophy Burnham The Wonder and Happiness of Being Old is a timeless introspection on age, love, passion, memories, regret and reconciliation, death, forgiveness, and underneath it all, the silent wisdom that derives from how differently we perceive our lives and struggles from the broader, higher perspective of years. What began as a singular letter in response to a younger family member standing on the precipice of her 60th birthday and asking the age-old question, ‘What’s it like to be old?,’ soon turned into one full year of unsent reflections, wonderment, and curiosity of a life truly lived. Out of these reflections, bestselling author Sophy Burnham developed this short, story-telling collection of unsent letters that offer readers of all ages hope and joy and new ways to perceive the process of aging. A kind and thoughtful read, The Wonder and Happiness of Being Old is the perfect companion piece for life that you can return to time and time again to join Burnham as she reflects on her own desires and experience with age and growth and living fully. Whether you’re at the doorstep of 40, 60, 70, or 90, she welcomes you in with an outstretched hand and a knowing nod of understanding and warmth. In the end, this book is about being old. It’s also about joy. And most importantly, it’s about love: love of self, of life, and of still being here to tell your stories.
