As we age, our bodies experience various changes that can affect our ability to obtain and absorb vital nutrients. Unfortunately, malnutrition can have severe consequences for seniors, including weakened immune systems, increased risk of infections, muscle weakness, and even cognitive decline. At Gourmet Meals, we recognise the importance of addressing this issue and providing nutritious meals specifically designed for seniors. There are several factors that contribute to malnutrition in seniors. One of the main reasons is a decrease in appetite. As we age, our sense of taste and smell may diminish, reducing interest in food. Additionally, certain medications can affect appetite and digestion, making it more challenging for seniors to consume an adequate amount of nutrients. Dental problems, difficulty chewing or swallowing, and limited mobility can also contribute to malnutrition in our aging population. Our portion-controlled meals provide seniors with the right calories and nutrients they need without overwhelming their appetites. We offer a variety of meals that cater to different dietary restrictions and preferences, including gluten-free, low sugar, low and reduced fat and low-sodium options, plus many more. This ensures seniors with specific nutritional needs can still enjoy flavourful and satisfying meals while maintaining their health. In addition to providing nutritious meals, Gourmet Meals also considers the challenges that seniors may face in preparing and cooking their food. Many seniors may have limited mobility or difficulty with meal preparation, which can further contribute to malnutrition. Our meals are delivered directly to their doorstep, packed into the freezer if required, and ready to heat and eat, making it convenient and effortless for seniors to enjoy a well-balanced meal. 3 As over fifties approach retirement, many seek ways to maximise their investment returns. We sat down with Samuel Amey, Investment Relations Manager at Funding, to discuss how Funding provides over fifties a pathway to higher returns for a more comfortable retirement. What exactly is a first mortgage investment? A first mortgage is a loan secured against real estate, where the lender holds the primary claim over the property. This means that in the event of a default, the first mortgage lender, acting on behalf of the investors, can sell the property to recover the loan amount. First mortgages offer investors a strong level of security as they are backed by tangible assets. Why should over 50s consider first mortgages as part of their portfolio? As investors near retirement, capital preservation and consistent income become crucial. Traditional fixedincome products, such as term deposits, often offer low yields. First mortgage investments provide an opportunity for enhanced returns while maintaining a low-risk profile due to the security of the underlying real estate and helps protect investors from the volatility of traditional equity markets. How does The Funding Income Trust work? The Funding Income Trust is a wholesale fund designed to provide investors access to a diversified Maximising Investment Returns portfolio of first mortgage loans. The fund offers attractive risk-adjusted returns, with income paid monthly, making it an ideal choice for those seeking consistent cash flow in retirement. Over Fundings 10-year history, we have maintained a robust track record of $0 in capital losses, lent over $1 billion in total loans and paid all capital and interest to investors at the target return*. We can find out about and watch rolling coverage of events worldwide. Unfortunately, these events are often negative, involving wars, natural disasters, or crises. Constant exposure to such content can impact mental health, leading to anxiety and stress over situations beyond our control. At Home Care Assistance, we recognise how bad news in the media affects individuals, especially seniors. This article provides practical tips to help older adults manage their news consumption and emotional well-being. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of excessive news exposure. Unlike younger individuals who balance negative news with busy, active lives, seniors may spend more time at home with fewer distractions. This can result in feelings of sadness or helplessness about the state of the world. Furthermore, past experiences, such as living through wars or economic crises, may resurface, intensifying emotional responses to current events. Tips for Managing News Exposure: 1. Understand the Impact of Bad News Many people do not realise the psychological toll of constant exposure to distressing news. Discuss with your loved ones how negative news can contribute to anxiety and depression. Recognising these effects is the first step toward managing them. Additionally, understanding how their past experiences shape their reactions can provide valuable insight into their emotional state. 2. Limit Exposure to Negative News Reducing news consumption can help mitigate its impact. Encourage seniors to watch less news and choose reliable, balanced sources. Setting a specific time for news intake, such as 30 minutes in the evening, prevents excessive exposure. If distressing news dominates television broadcasts, consider introducing streaming services or entertainment channels as alternatives. 3. Encourage Healthy Conversations Allow older loved ones to express their feelings about distressing news but ensure discussions remain balanced. Engage in constructive conversations that include positive aspects of the world. Acknowledging emotions while redirecting focus to uplifting topics can foster a healthier perspective. 4. Promote Positive Activities Encouraging participation in enjoyable activities can counterbalance negative news. Hobbies like crafting, gardening, reading, or volunteering can bring fulfilment and purpose. Activities such as meditation, yoga, or light exercise help create a sense of calm and stability. 5. Foster Social Connections Social isolation increases vulnerability to the negative effects of bad news. Organising regular family check-ins or establishing a visitation schedule ensures seniors have consistent company. Joining local clubs or online groups provides additional opportunities for social engagement. 6. Provide Resources for Support If distressing news triggers past traumas, professional support may be beneficial. A general practitioner can recommend appropriate mental health resources. Support groups can also provide a safe space for processing emotions. 7. Encourage a Balanced Perspective Teach seniors to evaluate news critically, distinguishing between balanced reporting and sensationalism. Sharing positive news or personal highlights can help counteract negative narratives, reinforcing a more optimistic outlook. Staying informed is important, but excessive exposure to negative news can be harmful, particularly for seniors. Implementing these strategies can help your loved ones maintain a balanced perspective and safeguard their mental well-being. Contact Home Care Assistance Gold Coast on 5528 1643. See advert page 9

Gold Coast since 2001 Let us create your new and rejuvenated garden where you can sit back, relax and enjoy your tranquil surroundings ... Specialising Garden Makeovers & Rejuvenation * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping The terrible damage caused to trees, and by trees to homes, sheds, fences, roads, and the power network during the recent destructive Ex Cyclone Alfred reminds me of the long list of often complex reasons that may lead to tree failure. It’s a while since I’ve had cause to look up significant research that followed cyclones including Tracey in 1974, Winifred in 1986, and Yasi in 2011. Each of these studies has led to an important and growing information base. It is clear when viewing these reports that there is no single factor but there are known causes. Here are just a few, which I hope might lead readers to look up the report ‘An assessment of tree susceptibility and resistance to cyclones A study based on Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi 2nd February 2011 Greening Australia and Ergon Energy” City of Townsville; Author Dr G. Calvert. The estate we live in had major tree losses, upwards of 20 beautiful trees that provided shade, and sheltered bird life. The soil is shallow and was saturated to the point of liquification after intense rainfall. The area had already been flooded several times this year before Alfred! The strength of the roots could not withstand the lateral (side to side) stress caused by the wind. Those that blew over had been planted during the development of the estate and were all planted as advanced trees. No trees that grew naturally on the estate blew over, although there were branch losses. Nearby street trees in confined spaces also blew over and it is likely these were also planted in advanced form. (Following Cyclone Winifred a notable difference was shown between cultivated and naturally grown trees. Oliver and Wilson 1986). Gardening The Yasi Research paper indicated compromised root systems were often the cause in those planted as advanced plants, as well as differing soil types. It advises the emphasis should be on several factors including planting small trees, loosening surrounding soil, and with no added backfilling. Our estate also had several snapped trunks on semi-mature trees. The Yasi report cites this failure occurs when wind loading exceeds the mechanical strength of the wood. Another factor that may contribute to branch loss is branch lopping that is not compliant with Australian Arborist Standards. This may result in regrowth with poor connections and attachments. I hope everyone remains safe as they go about the recovery. One thing is certain to me after the losses across the whole City of Gold Coast – we will always need trees. Please choose wisely and re-plant carefully. DENTURES DIRECT TO PUBLIC Registered with the Dental Board of Australia & Australian Dental Prosthetist Assoc. Ltd TWO LOCATIONS Worongary & Robina Dental Health and Dentures What are the types of Denture Adhesives? Paste application. Apply this denture adhesive to a dry or preferably wet denture. Avoid placing adhesive close to the denture borders. If the adhesive oozes, use less of the product. For dentures on the upper jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - along the ridge area and one down the centre. For dentures on the lower jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - in the centreof the ridge area. Powder application. Sprinkle a thin, uniform layer throughout the tissue-bearing surface of the denture. Shake off excess powder and press the denture into place. Powders may be preferred over pastes because they are easier to clean off the denture and tissue. In addition, they don’t have the same tendency as pastes do to “shim” (keep the denture away from the tissue). Will Dentures Change How I Speak? After getting dentures, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words. If so, practice by saying the difficult words out loud. With practice and with time you will become accustomed to speaking properly with dentures. If dentures “click” while you’re talking, contact your dentist. Dentures may occasionally slip when you laugh, cough, or smile. Reposition the dentures by gently biting down and swallowing. If any speaking problem persists, consult your dentist or prosthodontist. Are Dentures Worn 24 Hours a Day? Your dentist or prosthodontist will instruct you as to how long to wear dentures and when to remove them. During the first several days after receiving your denture, you may be asked to wear it all the time, including while you sleep. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it is the quickest way to identify the areas on the denture that may need adjustment. Once adjustments are made, you should remove dentures before going to bed. This allows gum tissues to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. The denture can be put back in the mouth in the morning. Should I Use a Denture Adhesive? A denture adhesive may be considered under the following circumstances: • To enhance satisfaction with a properly constructed denture. Adhesives enhance retention, stability, bite force, and an individual’s sense of security. • To assist individuals with dry mouth conditions that lessen denture adherence, such as individuals taking cold medications, those with neurologic disabilities including strokes, and the elderly. • To provide added stability and security for those who place unusual demands on facial muscles, such as public speakers or musicians. 12 Des and Wendy: Striking the Right Chord in Retirement For 79-year-old Des Weatherhog, retirement is about embracing new adventures, staying active, and making meaningful connections. “I lost my wife, Barb, to breast cancer 16 years ago, which really slowed down my motivation,” said Des, a former children’s clothing agent and business owner. “Then I saw an ad inviting people to learn the ukulele, sing, and have fun. I had no musical experience, but I thought it would be a great way to meet people and learn something new. It was wonderful.” That decision was life-changing. The ukulele group, hosted by Wendy Chappell (74), not only introduced Des to music but also to Wendy, who is now his companion in living life to the fullest. Staying Active with BUnyAH Exercise plays a big role in Des and Wendy’s lifestyle. On their doctor’s recommendation, they joined the Bond University Allied Health (BUnyAH) program for healthy ageing. “We’ve done every aspect of the program, and it’s been fantastic,” Des said. “I especially enjoyed exercising at Avanti Health Centre, which follows the ‘use it or lose it’ principle. I wasn’t as steady on my feet, and Wendy and I wanted to keep fragility at bay.” Des values the program’s social aspect. “I saw improvements in so many people, especially those hesitant to try new things. It wasn’t just the exercises—it was the camaraderie and support. Some introverted people really came out of their shells.” Guest speakers also left a lasting impression. “They shared practical tips, like what to do if you fall at home. The enthusiasm of the BUnyAH instructors, which included Bond University students and academics, was contagious, and their energy fed down to all the participants - it made such a difference,” he said. Hitting the Road Des and Wendy’s zest for life extends beyond the program. “Too many people put things off for a tomorrow that never comes. Our ukulele sessions have taken us to the Blue Mountains, 1770, and the Sunshine Coast.” The couple travel Australia in their motorhome. “Some people hardly ever leave their front door, but we just jump in the van and take off. Life is too short to sit around,” Des said. They even went fossicking at Lightning Ridge last year. “I wasn’t into digging things up before, but we had an absolute ball,” he said. Finding Joy in the Small Things Closer to home, they cycle and walk daily along the Southport Broadwater. Wendy won a bronze medal in walking netball at the Pan Pacific Masters Games and enjoys tennis and golf. Music remains a source of joy. “I made my own ukulele from Tasmanian Oak, and it plays the best out of the eight I own,” Des said with a smile. Whether strumming his handmade ukulele, cycling together, or setting off on new adventures, Des and Wendy are loving life. “The ukulele is about meeting people, staying active, and enjoying life— just like the BUnyAH program,” he said. A beach wheelchair lockbox trial continues at Burleigh Beach which will includes two beach wheelchairs and matting for use from 8am to 5pm during summer. The trial allows a person with a disability and their companion to access beach wheelchairs and matting at a time convenient to them through a QR code and passcode. “The Gold Coast has some of the best beaches in the world and the beach wheelchair lockbox trial is another step to ensuring everyone can enjoy what the popular Burleigh has to offer,” Division 12 Councillor Nick Marshall said. “We want everyone to be able to have a beach experience and this lockbox pilot allows people with disability to access the beach spontaneously,” Cr Marshall added. The second installation is an accessible pool pod at the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre which provides safe and dignified access to the pool. The pool pod can be used by more than one person at a time, so a carer New technology and equipment for a more accessible and inclusive Gold Coast or support person can provide assistance. The City is the first local government in South East Queensland to install this innovative technology in a public facility. “As part of our commitment to accessible and inclusive features at the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre, we have installed this new state-of-theart pool pod in the warm water pool to provide access for everyone,” said Division 13 Councillor Josh Martin. “The pool pod was developed for the London Paralympics and is an innovative piece of technology that will ensure people with disabilities can access the pool in a safe and dignified way,” Cr Martin added. Both venues have Changing Places facilities with an accessible toilet including ceiling tracking hoist and height adjustable change table at Burleigh Beach, and accessible parking, changing rooms, ramps and stairs into pools, hoists, and new aquatic wheelchairs at the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre. What is a Repair Café? Repair Cafes are pop-up events where volunteer fixers, menders and repairers provide a free repair service to the community to extend the life of our products, keep waste out of landfill and shift away from the over consumptive and throw away mindset. The community are invited to bring in a household item needing repair and together, the repair volunteer and item owner work together to repair the item, exchanging skills and knowledge on repair, as well as expanding community social connections and having a friendly chat and coffee. Items repaired may include clothing and textiles, fashion jewellery, low voltage tech and battery electronics, leather goods, bags, picture frames, sharpening, small upholstery and timber items, children’s toys, hand and garden tools and many other household item that can be carried in. Founder of the Gold Coast Repair Café, David Paynter explains, “There are over 3500 Repair Cafes around the globe with an expanding interest in the repair movement happening locally on the Gold Coast. Repair keeps items out of landfill, it saves on carbon emissions by not having to replace the item with a new one, as well as saving people money during a challenging cost of living period.” The first Repair Café Gold Coast was held on the 15th August 2020 in Currumbin, with past events held around the GC including Miami, Burleigh, Arundel and Springbrook, partnering with Rotaract and Rotary Clubs, as well as the Springbrook Mountain Community Association and Springbrook Men’s Shed. Like all similar community based groups be they a Community Garden, Men’s Shed or similar, they also provide the opportunity to connect with those in your community, share culture and friendship, learn new skills or share your existing knowledge with others. They also help reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness by providing a space to bring people together, connect with others in their community either by volunteering, or by visiting and participating, with all the mental health benefits this provides. This event is supported by Councillor Dan Doran, Division 11, CoGC. The Wonder And Happiness Of Being Old: Offerings Of Hope, Joy, And New Ways To Perceive Aging by Sophy Burnham The Wonder and Happiness of Being Old is a timeless introspection on age, love, passion, memories, regret and reconciliation, death, forgiveness, and underneath it all, the silent wisdom that derives from how differently we perceive our lives and struggles from the broader, higher perspective of years. What began as a singular letter in response to a younger family member standing on the precipice of her 60th birthday and asking the age-old question, ‘What’s it like to be old?,’ soon turned into one full year of unsent reflections, wonderment, and curiosity of a life truly lived. Out of these reflections, bestselling author Sophy Burnham developed this short, story-telling collection of unsent letters that offer readers of all ages hope and joy and new ways to perceive the process of aging. A kind and thoughtful read, The Wonder and Happiness of Being Old is the perfect companion piece for life that you can return to time and time again to join Burnham as she reflects on her own desires and experience with age and growth and living fully. Whether you’re at the doorstep of 40, 60, 70, or 90, she welcomes you in with an outstretched hand and a knowing nod of understanding and warmth. In the end, this book is about being old. It’s also about joy. And most importantly, it’s about love: love of self, of life, and of still being here to tell your stories. Is there any way you could carry it through customs for me? Under your robes perhaps?” “I would love to help you, dear, but I must warn you: I will not lie.” “With your honest face, father, no one will question you.” When they got to customs, she let the priest go ahead of her. The official asked: “Father, do you have anything to declare?” “From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare.” The official thought this answer strange, so asked: “And what do you have to declare from your waist to the floor?” “I have a marvelous little instrument designed to be used on a woman, but which is, to date, unused.” Roaring with laughter, the official said: “Go ahead, Father.
